LA Witch – Girls go BOOM at Kinky Star

/ By :

It felt like a night during the Gentse Feesten. Lot’s of people, hot and sweaty, thirst-quenching beer and some quality music. Except it was a regular Wednesday night. LA Witch managed to gather a very big crowd for their second performance in Ghent. Last year they made a stop at Cafe Video only a couple hundred meters further down the road. I’m glad they came back because I didn’t make it last time. Girls Go BOOM got the three witches back to Belgium and on stage in the tiny Kinky Star.

Girls Go BOOM I hear you ask? Well you’ve probably heard of the name already or at least seen it around, chances are you’ve already been to an event by them. Long story short it’s girls putting girls on stage. Let’s be fair the music industry is a sector dominated by men, on stage and off stage. Lindsi Dendauw, founder of Girls Go BOOM, had enough of that lack of women on stage and took it upon herself to change that. With Girls Go BOOM she offers a platform to girls and women to take their rightful place and rock! If you’d like to read more, Chase did an interview with the mastermind behind it all. A very interesting read, recommended for sure!

You get the idea, women to the front, men take a step back. I’m not sure if I simply paid more attention to it or not but I can say there were definitely more women present than the average show. Anyway, I love the idea and concept of it and really hope they get some more fantastic bands to Ghent. I know a couple I’d really love to see!

On to the real deal, LA Witch (****). As the name suggests they hail from the far Los Angeles and I gladly believe they’re three wonderful witches. As soon as the first notes were played the music took us straight to the heat of the Mojave desert. The fact that it was hot in the Kinky Star definitely added to that effect. LA Witch brings a blend of that 60’s desert psychedelic rock mixed with an all-girls-garage-rock-band attitude. I’d say you could close your eyes and you’d be in a dark, hot, tiny pub back in the 60’s. The thing is, that’s exactly what the Kinky Star is! In that respect there wasn’t possibly a better venue in town for this concert. The hour flew by and LA Witch simply had you enchanted with their hazy, haunting sound. Combined with that girl power atmosphere that was hanging around in the air it created a magical show. If I wasn’t sold to them before, now I sure am. When are they coming back?
