Nox Aeterna – Aurora Borealis

/ / By :

A noisy radio report opens the album. The voice is telling us that the area we’re going to is very dangerous, this sets the mood for Nox Aeterna‘s third full-length album.

Chasing the North starts of with a solid riff, sending us on that journey to the dangerous place where the radio report just told us not to go. Very surprising is the keyboard part that comes up. It gives a different dimension to the music. It’s like that extra vibe that gives the song a stronger feeling.

The previous album The Desperation Deal told the story of the brothers Einarr and Jorund and the demon Ranaah. Something inside me expected the story to continue in Aurora Borealis, but it doesn’t. Aurora Borealis, or northern light, takes us on a completely different journey. Northern light always has many different colors and shapes. This album kind of has this too. I mean, of course it’s one album and one story. But the meaning of the story depends on who listens to it. Are you scared of the unknown? Or do you take the risk to go to that unknown place?

Nox Aeterna has this special style that’s just overwhelming. It’s melodic death metal at it’s finest. To be honest, the name of the genre is just a way to describe their music. It explores the edges of the genre and goes beyond it with harmonic riffs and outstanding grunt vocals of lead singer Arnold Boukes. It’s an amazing album and amazing journey. Do you dare to take the jump into the void and join Nox Aeterna on their journey to find the northern light?

8.8The album comes in hard and doesn’t drop that power until the end of it. Amazing riffs, outstanding vocals, overwhelming harmonics, … that pretty much summarizes it. So, what do you think? Do you dare to take the journey to find the northern light?
