SeeYouSpaceCowboy – The Correlation Between Entrance and Exit Wounds

SeeYouSpaceCowboy’s first full length album is here and I can tell you one thing: it’s brutal. Metalcore with a strong hardcore presence, filled with anger. It’s fast, but it doesn’t forget the melodic parts either. Also a little bit of humor can be found. Or at least to me it was humorous, even though it wasn’t meant like that most likely.

With High Hopes and Clipped Wings’ is such an emotional song. Yet, when the song is halfway it’s just lead singer Connie Sgarbossa saying the word ‘ashes’ with no musical support whatsoever. It grabs your attention and makes you think about it. Even if it’s just 1 second of a 2 and a half minute song.

Also the next song ‘Disdain Coupled With a Wide Smile’ takes a few seconds to say the words: ‘’Young lives burned down by the serpent’s tongue, but shift through the ashes they still haven’t won. So shouts the fallen, these fucking pigs must be undone’’. Followed by a scream from the guts.

Very surprising is the song ‘A Space Marked ‘Escape’. After the first songs I expected a fast and angry song. But this one is instrumental with clean guitars. Guitars that weep with cymbals clashing in the background. Very sad and a pause in the album to collect your thoughts for a minute about what you’ve just heard. At the end it sounds like the song is stuck and you get that feeling that you are being chased or that something is staring at you. You know, that horror game feeling.

Next song ‘Prolonging the Inevitable Forever’ is a more melodic song. It starts of with slower, low notes. Halfway the beat goes up and so do the notes. Kinda like a heartbeat of somebody that’s going crazy inside his head, but nobody notices on the outside.

Late December’ blew me away. The music video with it is so well done. It had me staring at my screen for a few minutes. Man…. The song starts off with a slow, calm melody while the lyrics are being spoken. A formula for songs that always gets me. It’s so pure, so down to earth, so real. The theme of wanting to kill yourself and/or depression. A heavy theme, a dark album in general. But man, SeeYouSpaceCowboy delivers it like you feel it. Even if you don’t know the feeling, you will feel it. This goes through flesh and bone.

It took me a while to get into the album. But when I got to this song, it got me. The visuals with it just worked perfectly. You have to see it for yourself to know what I mean with these words.

When you listen to this album, you hear what a person feels when they go through dark times. I personally haven’t experienced that. But having a degree in psychology, I imagine this is what a person sounds like from the inside when they experience depression or any form of really deep, dark thoughts. Some songs are energetic and angry, some of the songs are annoying. Some of them are sad. None of these feelings seems to be able to find the light somewhere though it all. All the feelings are tangled within each other, screaming for help, on the inside.
