Hiqpy releases debut single ‘Something’

Alternative Rock, Indie Rock

Hiqpy‘s debut single is called ‘Something’. The Amsterdam indie rock band was very successful last year with their performance at Noorderslag and performed at several major festivals last year, but has never released music before.

What if Kurt Cobain and Ariana Grande got a Pokémon together? Yes, then you pretty much get a Hiqpy. The 4-headed creature is playful and somewhat stubborn. Super Power: Spits flames of echoing adlibs and fuzzy guitars.

‘Something’ is about finding the balance between shame and curiosity, says singer Abir Hamam. “About giving in to a feeling that was never supposed to be there, or that you didn’t know was there. About letting go of religious, cultural and social expectations in order to be able to experience love, for someone else and – with that – for yourself.”

Hiqpy consists of singer Abir Hamam, guitarist Victor ter Veld, bassist Tom Radsma and drummer Kasper de Boer. The four met at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where, inspired by Wolf Alice, they found their sound in alternative indie rock, in which mainstream pop is cleverly given a place. “With the energy of nineties guitars and the vocal finesse of today,” says the band. “Hiqpy is rock with a female voice, literally and figuratively. Grunge, but make it chic.”

In 2023, Hiqpy participated in Popronde as 3voor12 Talent, which led to a fifteen-minute performance at Noorderslag in January 2024. There, the band was not only picked up by the audience, but also by the music industry and national media. “In the noisy foyer of the Oosterpoort, Hiqpy’s grungy shoegaze songs went straight to the marrow,” wrote 3voor12. OOR predicted the band “a bright future, with a live show that stands like a house”. The fifteen minutes in Groningen resulted in more than forty festival shows in 2024, from Bevrijdingspop Haarlem to Into The Great Wide Open. At the end of 2024, Hiqpy signed with Sony Music. And that while they hadn’t released a note of music yet. “Hiqpy is suddenly the next big thing, while there is nothing on Spotify yet” was the headline in NRC.

This is now changing. A year after their high-profile performance at Noorderslag 2024, Hiqpy releases their debut single ‘Something’ . For the production, they collaborated with British Grammy Award winner Danton Supple, who produced several Coldplay albums.
