Kristian Espedal's, also known as Gaahl (ex-Gorgoroth, ex-Godseed, Trelldom, Gaahlskagg), musical inspirations extend beyond the spectrum of black metal, despite his early days with Gorgoroth and Trelldom, Gaahl delves into something deeper on the sophomore “Braiding the Stories” released via Season of Mist on June 6th, 2025. I was curious enough to review the new album, and the reason is that I was impressed by his deep thrilling vocals on the debut album “GastiR - Ghosts Invited”.

With a name preceding its fantastic reputation, Cincinnati-based melodic black metal formation Valdrin returns after two years with a new EP in follow-up to their 2023 epic opus 'Throne of the Lunar Soul'. The direction of the five new tracks blends elements from the previous endeavor, taking an overly heavier approach. 'Apex Violator' is scheduled for a release date on June 20th, via the Italian underground label Avantgarde Music.

As a prolific artist in the realm of black metal, Swartadauþuz has emerged with originality. His varied side project bands include Gardsghastr, Secrets, and Greve and he is mostly recognized for his work on Bekëth Nexëhmü. Gygath is yet another side project band formed by Sortilege, who made his first appearance with the band Greve as a session musician and did excellent work on Secrets' debut album 'Towards the Nightside'. It’s no surprise that both musicians have great chemistry.

Kveldstimer is a project band formed by guitarist, bassist, and synth Azeruel Woldaeg aka Alex Poole (Chaos Moon, Gardsghastr, Ars Hmu, Häxanu, Azelisassath among others) alongside guitarist, synths and vocalist Collier d'ombre (Ablazen Winds, Azelisassath, Collier d'Ombre, Fervent Diabola, Ghemhamforash) and drummer Seguigo (Häxanu, Azelisassath, and Ghemhamforash). The exceptional quality of the songwriting on the debut full-length album 'The Cursed Oak', released on April 12, 2025, via Bestial Records, has caught my attention, particularly for the outstanding work of the respected members, such as Alex Poole.

After five full years, Swedish death metal purveyors Puteraeon are back with a brand-new album. “Mountains of Madness” is the Swedes' fifth studio album and arguably one of their best. The dark nature of the composition and atmospheric passages alternating into mid-tempo, with tremolo melodies defining the excellent guitar work, you are about to delve into a whole otherworldly realm of horror. “Mountains of Madness” is a concept album based on the science-fiction and cosmic horror novella by the American author H. P. Lovecraft in 1931.

With “Silent Echoes”, Gruesome bridges the gap between the old school death metal and technical death metal. The line-up of Matt Harvey (vocalist and guitarist) Daniel Gonzalez (lead guitarist) Robin Mazin (bassist), and Gus Rios (drummer) could not resist the inevitable evolution. The third studio album released by Relapse Records on June 6th, 2025, aims to push boundaries to reflect a true tribute to Chuck Schuldiner (Death); however, it is by no means a necessary step that embodies Death’s classic album “Human”.
