Slaughter To Prevail – Grizzly

Slaughter To Prevail’s journey began in 2014 when two musicians from completely different worlds meet. Alex Terrible, forging his monstrous vocals from a bedroom in the cold, Russian city of Yekaterinburg, crossed paths online with guitarist Jack Simmons, who sharpened his craft in a quiet town of Essex, UK. What started as a distant collaboration quickly turned into a brotherhood. And eleven years later this brotherhood has released his 3rd album called 'Grizzly'.

We open this album with ‘Banditos’ which is an absolute banger to begin with. Alex Terrible growls, screams and spits the words out of his mouth. It is vile and filthy. ‘Russian Grizzly In America’ is one of the latest singles that came out, and the title could be seen as a metaphor. Alex Terrible who really looks like a grizzly and is currently living in America. With ‘Imdead’ we get the first collaboration of the day. Alex is clenching swords with Ronnie Radke from Falling In Reverse. And Ronnie has the best line of the album, but I’m not gonna spoil this one, you have to find out yourself. ‘Babayka’ has a strong Rammstein vibe, and that’s not the last time on this album. It’s in the way he uses his voice and the samples that play on the background. I like it.

‘Viking’ also came out as a single back in 2023, and they already played it live plenty. I’ve seen the power of this song live at Graspop 2024. Just before the breakdown hits, he shouts without a microphone ‘UNSATISFIED PRIMAL FEAR.’ And then he smashes the microphone unto his head. ‘Koschei’ is, together with ‘Lift That Shit’ that comes later on this album, one of the fillers on this album. But no need to worry because they’re still good. They are just playing such a high quality of deathcore on this album. Most deathcore bands would be jealous of the fillers that are on this album.

And there is the second collaboration of the day. ‘Song 3’ where the girls of BABYMETAL come along. It’s not my cup of tea the hype of BABYMETAL, but they are doing a very good job on this one and it just works. ‘Behelit’ is also a single from 2023 and is also the first time they use orchestra samples and I really hope this is something they will do in the future cause it sounds incredible. And ‘Rodina’ has also the orchestra samples and the Rammstein vibe which I mentioned before. It’s also my personal favorite of this album. ‘Conflict’ another one of the singles of this album keeps up the brutality of this album. ‘Kid Of Darkness’ which is also a single keeps that vibe alive. We end this album with the oldest single of the album. ‘1984’ already came out in 2022, and we had to wait 3 years to receive this magnificent beast of an album.

To end I’m gonna tell you a small story. Maybe they are people that think ow it’s a Russian band and with the war that’s tricky. Alex Terrible is the nicest guy I have ever seen. I saw them live at Graspop in 2024. A guy got hurt in the pit, and Alex stopped the concert to allow this guy get medical support. He restarted the performance only once he was sure that the guy was safe. After the show, I saw a video that Alex went to see the guy backstage at the ambulance car to see if he was all right and even made a selfie with the guy. Metal brings people together, even a Russian band.
