There’s something special about old school Finnish death metal, think of Demilich, old Sentenced, Amorphis or more recent additions like Krypts. Morbific does not disappoint there either, playing a particularly gory version. They’re a pretty young band with their debut album being released just five years ago. They’re down to their third album now, the succulently juicy moniker ‘Bloom of the Abnormal Flesh’. Despite their young age the threesome sound as if they’ve been rotting in the ground since the early nineties. Delicious.

Funebrarum is a bit of a legendary cult band that’s been around since the turn of a century with a pretty impressive pedigree if you look at the musicians who have been part of this across the past two and a half decades. Originally, they actually sported 3 guys out of the Evoken camp. They’re no longer part of the current lineup, but it does give you an indication of where the band were at in 1999. They released a new album earlier this year after a ten year hiatus with a revamped band composition that consists of members from Worm, Atramentus and Hulder to namedrop just a few. On this tour another familiar face joined in the shape of Gatecreeper’s bass player Alex Brown. There was a set you could get down and doomy and ridiculously heavy when they wanted to. With a name like Funebrarum you know they want to, but that doesn’t stop them from going all the way out and blast like it’s 1999 neither. If you were looking for uncompromising, solid death metal from yore with a touch of doom in there, these guys tonight were the real thing.
