UK alt-pop trio Exploring Birdsong reveal new single ‘The Collapse’

Alternative, Pop
rogue

Our site is dedicated to everything rock and metal with a few sidesteps in music that appeals to the same music fans like synthwave, neo (pagan) folk, industrial,… But some of us do have a taste for music and art that goes beyond these limitations. Enter “GRIMM goes rogue”: where you’ll get a metalhead, punker, rocker,… who ventures into realms beyond their usual habitat with an open mind and give their honest opinion, views and experiences.

"A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it is not open."

Frank Zappa

A beautifully curious blend of pop-sensibility, delicacy, experimentation and heaviness. Piano led, guitar-less trio Exploring Birdsong are paving their own musical path with their latest single The Collapse. The single follows the band’s second EP Dancing in the Face of Danger (March 2023, Long Branch Records), released to rave reviews worldwide.

Rarely are new groups as exciting, talented or unique as Exploring Birdsong. Straddling pop, progressive rock and uncategorisable genre-blending beauty, the band are unplaceable for the most part, but bring to mind elements of Kate Bush, Sleep Token, Everything Everything and Karnivool.

Rarely too do you hear voices as captivating as frontwoman Lynsey Ward‘s. Powerful, controlled, and spine-chillingly tender, Lynsey‘s vocals help mark Exploring Birdsong as a prospect to watch, from the release of their acclaimed debut The Thing With Feathers (2019) to 2023’s EP Dancing in the Face of Danger.

The band comment:

“Although in a very different style, The Collapse was originally written way back in 2017 during our time at university. Used as part of our songwriting course, we submitted it almost as a throwaway song, and as a result, didn’t resurface again until mid 2023. When we went back and re-listened, time had given us fresh ears, and allowed us to rework and really bring out the potential in what is now a song we’re super proud of.The song used to be centred around just piano and a solo vocal. For it to have blossomed into something so wildly differing in texture is really really cool for us.

It fits nicely into what feels like a transitional period for us as a band. Whilst we work on material for our debut full length, we also want to give time and attention to songs that we’ve either reworked or written in past, that otherwise wouldn’t have a home because they don’t quite fit the mould of the direction we’re heading in. The Collapse is one of those songs – it’s nice to give it it’s own piece of the limelight.”

Exploring Birdsong caught the eyes of key players in the press (Prog Magazine, Kerrang! Magazine, Classic Rock Magazine) and achieved two Progressive Music Awards nominations. The young group recently joined Katatonia as special guest for their shows in Ireland – the first live performances since their European debut at Euroblast Festival (Cologne, DE), mainstage set at RADAR Festival, and inaugural headline tour across the UK in September 2021, including London, Manchester and Birmingham, and following successful support tours with the likes of Sleep Token and Thank You Scientist.

Exploring Birdsong will be headlining London’s Downstairs at the Dome (formerly Boston Music Room) on 16th February. Support comes from Blanket. Get your tickets: https://linktr.ee/exploringbirdsong

Line Up:
Lynsey Ward – Vocals, piano
