Bloodbound – Field of Swords

Bloodbound have been around for years and have delivered many good songs. But their identity as a band has not been consistent. Along side many line up changes their music changed a lot as well. Their newest album follows in the footsteps of it's predecessor, 'Creatures of the Dark Realm'.

Field of Swords‘ as a whole is fun and the well produced. The music, vocals and mixing are all well done and the lyrics tell of epic tails. Nothing to complain about, but yet this newest album just fails to keep me engaged. If I have it on as background music it’s all well and fine, but if I try to actively listen to it the songs just kinda blend together. While each individual song works fine a can’t even listen to the whole album in one go without getting bored. I don’t even have a favourite track on the album as none of the songs stand out to me in any way.

The songs range from fast to faster, full steam ahead, I’m just not sure if I like the direction they are heading towards. I connect better through softer songs/ballads and those are no where to be seen on this album. Now personal preference aside this new album feels driven and as if Bloodbound at least found a direction they want to explore more. It has similarities to Stratovarius and HammerFall, and well, it worked for those bands, so why shouldn’t it for Bloodbound.

REVIEW SCORE

  • Music / Songwriting 7/10
  • Vocals / Lyrics 6/10
  • Mix / Production 8/10
  • Artwork & Packaging 6/10
  • Originality 4/10
6.2

With ‘Field of Swords‘ Bloodbound deliver a well executed, but slightly predictable album. While all of the productions is well done it unfortunately fails to deliver anything new or at least over the top captivating.
