Whitechapel – Hymns In Dissonance

Whitechapel is an American deathcore band that has created a "love it or hate it" vibe. Beginning as a brutal deathcore band they started to experiment with some clean vocals. Pretty good cause many of them said it was like Corey Taylor singing. But deathcore and clean vocals do not mix well. Suicide Silence tried it and that was a mistake. The fans were not happy (me included). Whitechapel implemented a clean vocals song on their 6th album 'Mark Of The Blade'. And then they made 2 albums called 'The Valley' and 'Kin' that we're different. More clean vocals songs and some brutal songs, but not like old Whitechapel. But I can tell you now that the old fans can return 'cause the old Whitechapel has returned with some brutal shit. Let's dive in, shall we.

‘Prisoner 666’ is the first sledgehammer blow: after a short intro they unleash their demons with a Phil Bozeman who grunts and screams like the old days. Finally the godfathers of deathcore are back. No slowing down with ‘Hymns In Dissonance’ that holds the brutal sound they started with. Massive riffs, agressive blastbeats; it’s all coming your way. Even a little wink to their second album with the sentence “We are the last living sons of THE FATHER OF LIES”. Near the end there is a breakdown sentence with the iconic sentence: “Father, we’ve come to devour the eyes of god” and all hell breaks loose. If you’re wondering if Phil Bozeman still can scream then ‘Diabolic Slumber’ is the song for you. What he produces in this song is diabolical and what they produce in their music is unbelievable. They still got it. If you thought they were a brutal deathcore band in their young days well this is the most brutal album I heard from them yet. Up to speed we are with ‘A Visceral Retch’ that drags itself through an destroyed landscape.

With ‘Ex Infernis’ they take a moment of rest to consequently blow you away with ‘Hate Cult Ritual.’ The buldering machine is moving again. They are experimenting also on this album but not like before. It’s not how many clean vocals can we produce, no, they are experimenting how brutal they can become. Listen to the sickening riff in the beginning of ‘The Abysmal Gospel.’ We are near the end of the album and guess what? No clean vocals whatsoever. ‘Bedlam’ is a great example of Phil Bozeman grunting his way through the song. ‘Mammoth God’ is also a massive destroyer and who thought we end with a beautiful note. We are ending with a beautiful note, yet in a sickening and brutal way. ‘Nothing Is Coming For Any Of Us’ is the last song of the album and we are ending in style. Unleashing their demons for a last time with a even more devastating breakdown. And at the end a beautiful outro riff to ease your mind.

Whitechapel is back, bitches. I thought the day would never come, but I can say finally that the brutal deathcore machine is up and running again. They’ll play on Graspop and I will be first in line to devour those filthy and destructive songs. Beam me up, Scotty. See you all there.
