Labyrinth – Welcome To The Absurd Circus

After the well-received comeback album, ‘Architecture of a god’ the Italian metal band Labyrinth is back. The band exists since 1991 and had some turbulence in the 2010s. Nevertheless, they sure gave a big push in the Italian metal scene.

The title track of the album ‘The Absurd Circus’ kicks you right into the new album. The first time listening to this track you feel that the band is ready to put their foot down again with the new release. Starting out with some grinding guitars and a good rhythm beat from the drums. The song promises to be heavy. It weakens down a little in the middle with a beautiful instrumental bridge.

They continue with ‘Live Today’. It reminds a lot of ‘Return to Heaven Denied’, a classic Labyrinth song. They go on with ‘One More Last Chance’. Continued by ‘As long as It Lasts’. This song is light head bang material from intro till the end. ‘Den of Snakes’ and ‘Words Minefield’ are beautifully sung but more for relaxing background music.

Suddenly out of nowhere sounds a familiar song. It is a cover from ‘Dancing with Tears in My Eyes’ from Ultravox. And it is a really good cover! ‘Sleepwalker’ is another song I like because it really makes me think. All because of this line: “Far away from this concrete jungle, trying to breathe again”. It gives a strong message that we all need to get away from time to time, and take time to be ourselves again.

‘A reason to survive’ is a very calm and peaceful song without any drums. I expected a bit more from the title but it is what it is. The closure is ‘Finally Free’. A top song with a strong voice and a very nice guitar solo, perfect for closing this album.

Many credits to the band, most songs are between five and six minutes, which I think, is incredible.
