Steel Panther “Heavy Metal Rules tour” (The Circus, Helsinki) – 19/1/2020

Yeah! Steel Panther is back in town! It’s been quite a while since they last dropped by Helsinki and in the mean time they’ve released their latest album ‘Heavy Metal Rules’. Luckily All Things Live Finland decided to bring them to Finland for a couple of dates! I didn’t have to think twice about wanting to catch the show of these hilarious guys to close my weekend appropriately!

Wayward Sons (***)

As warm-up, they had brought the UK rock band Wayward Sons with them. Not being too familiar with them, I was pleasantly surprised by a bunch of energetic dudes playing some decent hard rock with a slight punk attitude and a bluesy touch. For a support band they were given plenty of time to show what they’re all about and it looked like the people that already got to the venue early appreciated their music quite much. Personally I thought that quite some of the songs sounded a bit too similar to really hold my attention, but all in all not too bad of a show to start the night with.

And then it finally was time for sex, glam and rock ‘n’ roll. Steel Panther is known for having a lot of fun on stage, joking around constantly and loads of interaction with their crowd including inviting girls on stage at several occasions throughout the show. And yeah, the jokes might be almost constantly the same ones, but the fact that they don’t take themselves too serious and bring their act in which they’re spoofing the whole glam metal scene so convincingly, it still stays extremely entertaining. Laughing with each other, teasing, laughing with other bands,… nothing is sacred for them. Or well, the only things are maybe cocaine, sex and boobs… the phrase “show me your titties” was barely off the air.

Of course they played a couple of tracks from their latest release ‘Heavy Metal Rules’ like ‘All I Wanna Do Is Fuck (Myself Tonight)‘, ‘Fuck Everybody‘ and the ballad ‘I Ain’t Buying What You’re Selling‘. But most of their setlist was built up with some of their classics hits and fan favorites like ‘Asian Hooker‘, ‘Party All Day (Fuck All Night)‘, ‘Gloryhole‘ and of course ‘Death To All But Metal‘. When drummer Styx came from behind his drumkit to play keyboards and bring the sensitive ‘I Ain’t Buying What You’re Selling‘, he stuck around for a while still so the guys could take turns to serenade a pretty girl they took from the crowd.

Cranking the energy back up after that calmer moment, they invited a bunch more girls on stage for ‘Party All Day (Fuck All Night)‘ and made the group of girls even bigger for ‘17 Girls In A Row‘! They clearly had the time of their lives, dancing with and around the guys, taking selfies with them and even one of them doing a proposal to bassist Lexxi Foxxx… And if you thought that was the highlight of the night, the guys of Steel Panther had a little surprise for the Helsinki crowd still! The day after, Five Finger Death Punch had a show in Finland and some of the guys were apparently hanging out backstage and decided to come on stage and play along with the band on their cover of Van Halen‘s ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love‘. What a treat for all of us! Steel Panther simply knows how to put on a good show and I bet that the afterparty was just as wild afterwards!
