At the beginning of summer, before their appearance at Inkarceration back in July, we caught up with Vieda Boss, vocalist of the Cleveland, Ohio based death metal outfit Vicar Blood to fire off some quick questions about her musical journey and how the band got together…
GRIMM:
How long have you been involved in the music/metal scene?
Vieda Boss:
I have been involved in the metal scene for over 20 years, since I was a very young teenager. I would always sneak out and go to the shows in Cleveland at the legendary Peabodys and the Agora! I would always find myself in the Pirates Cove listening to death metal from Scandinavia, which was always my favorite!
GRIMM:
How did Vicar Blood come to be?
Vieda Boss:
Vicar Blood came to be when I noticed a friend of mine posting guitar videos regularly on TikTok and I decided to duet with him on a few of his riffs! Dan Gates and I decided to start this band after the video sounded really cool! It started before that though, I had played a show with Dan and his band and they were looking for a new singer and I auditioned for that part! Dan however, wanted to switch to vocals for that band and ended up ultimately doing that, which worked out well, but we remained good friends and ended up starting a new band together.
GRIMM:
Who are some bands that have influenced you and/or the band?
Vieda Boss:
Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, Obituary, Despised Icon, Cannibal Corpse.
GRIMM:
If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Vieda Boss:
I would like to play shows in Scandinavia!
GRIMM:
What do you think attracts people to extreme music?
Vieda Boss:
I think people are attracted to extreme music because it’s against the mainstream, it sometimes feels more raw and unhinged, rebellious and intense.
GRIMM:
What’s the wildest crowd you’ve witnessed and where was it?
Vieda Boss:
Dying Fetus and Sanguisugabogg!
GRIMM:
What’s something people outside the death metal scene misunderstand about the culture?
Vieda Boss:
Death metal has been here for a long time and has inspired countless bands in the mainstream. A lot of people misunderstand it sometimes because it’s not the mainstream sound they are spoon fed daily in their algorithms.
GRIMM:
If you could collaborate with any artist or band, dead or alive, who would it be?
Vieda Boss:
Amon Amarth because they are my favorite band.
GRIMM:
If someone unfamiliar with death metal asked for one song to understand your band, what track would you choose and why?
Vieda Boss:
I’d recommend our single Resist. It’s giving our old school death metal roots with modern tonality and a sludgy feel. It’s definitely the direction we are taking overall!
GRIMM:
What projects, tours or events do you have coming up?
Vieda Boss:
We play Inkcarceration Festival July 17th on infirmary stage at 12:15pm in Mansfield, Ohio.
Then we play the amazing reunion of ASCENSION at Globe Iron in Cleveland November 13th!
Our debut should be out later this year and next year we are going abroad.
