After intro ‘Initium’ we get ‘Fatal Design’ and it’s for the first time I have the feeling that Paavo is a part of the band. On the previous album and also his first one with Before The Dawn, he sang the songs but I didn’t feel it. But now I believe he finally stands his ground. In the melodic ‘As Above, So Below’ you can hear this perfectly what a magnificent voice this guy has, with both soaring cleans and guttural harsh vocals. And the music is perfectly written just listen to the riff that begins with ‘Mercury Blood.’ Such a workaholic and still write amazing songs it’s unbelievable.
All the songs stay in the same sound but always something slightly different. If you listen to ‘Stellar Effect’ you hear it’s Before The Dawn but it doesn’t sound like their previous songs but you know it’s them. But they can be straight forward and brutal too if you listen too ‘Stronghold’ that hits you like a freight train. In ‘Destination’ we can enjoy the beautiful voice of Paavo until it ripps open the sky to unleash his harsh side. With ‘Ad Infinitum’ we already reached the end but we go out with a bang cause this song is really a piece of work. Melodic and melancholic just as we like it.
Tuomas’ work for this year is about done with this new piece of art. It’s only 39 minutes long so it’s a rather short one but it doesn’t has to be a long album to be good and they prove it with ‘Cold Flare Eternal.’ More of this, please.
REVIEW SCORE
| 8 | Tuomas Saukkonen is back and so is Before The Dawn with their second album since their reunited. And Before The Dawn sounds exactly like it’s supposed to be. Agressive, melodic and melancholic. We want too see more in the future of this and I’m sure we will. |
