Bloodred Hourglass – We Should Be Buried Like This

Bloodred Hourglass have been around for a while, 20 years to be precise and they have long claimed their place in the scene. Yet they never quite tickled my fancy, until now...

We Should Be Buried Like This‘ combines the typical sound of Bloodred Hourglass with many new experiments. The album feels more versatile to me than their previous releases. While the album as a whole follows a common thread and feels like a unit, the individual songs also have their very own atmospheres. ‘The Crown Is Permanent‘ for example strongly reminds me of fellow Finns Turmion Kätilöt. And so each so brings some new influences, I can hear hints of In Flames, The Halo Effect, Amorphis and many more.

Of course not everything is new, Jaredi Koukonens vocals are as heavy as ever and they hit hard. The contrast between his harsh vocals and the modern soundscape of the syncs creates a very captivating and at parts pretty groovy sound. The music seems a bit more catchy to me then on pervious records while the force of the vocals is still enough to knock you off your feet. The album runs at a speed that barely gives you time to catch your breath and it never slows down for long.

Bloodred Hourglass joined forces with several other talented musicians for some cool cooperation. Sofia Ricar on ‘Royally Done‘, Aleksi Paasonen (BALANCE BREACH) and Lotta Ruutiainen (Luna Kills)  on ‘Mirage‘.

The divers nature of this album together with it’s catchiness ensure that it doesn’t get boring even after several spins. This is the best Bloodred Hourglass have ever sounded. Heavy riffs, intense melodies and crushing vocals, there is not one song that’s subpar.
