Caustic Wound – Grinding Mechanism of Torment

Death metal and grindcore style emerged in the late 80s and were fronted by the originators of this style with bands like Terrorizer, Repulsion, Napalm Death, and many more. Caustic Wound is one of these bands that achieved great success with the debut album “Death Posture”. Having formed in 2017 by members of Mortiferum and Corpus Offal, the Washington-based death grinders offer a perfect breeding with a visceral performance on the second outing “Grinding Mechanism of Torment”.

The album contains sixteen grinding, brutal tracks, enough to throw a tantrum in every song, but despite all the abrasive aggression, Caustic Wound delivers relentless aggression and ferocity of gore-grind. Right off the bat, “Grinding Mechanism of Torment” is an oppressive banger and works perfectly as an intro. “Blood Battery” starts with the crushing tone of the drums, the music highlights the abrasive manifesto that is firmly focused on brutality, and the riffing displays incredible consistency, which maintains the impact of the guttural growls and the grimy tone of the production.

The in-your-face blast beats are driven by gore-grind filled vocals; these elements make the album impressive and high-octane energy that bursts out loudly on several songs like “Drone Terror” and “Advanced Killing Methods”.

The riffs and furious drums resemble the sound of machine guns exploding rapidly into insane blast beats, and even the bass guitar works in tandem with fast drumming. The vocals are much improved from the previous album, yet Caustic Wound’s sheer intensity is an embodiment of brutal death metal, and it’s quite remarkable to say that the band has returned with a punishing record after five years of silence.

Songs like “Blackout”, “The Bleed Rail”, and “Endless Grave” move from mid-tempo to fast blasting tremolo riffs, the growls create a monstrous reverb, and the stomping bass lines offer contagious rhythm sections and ferocious percussion barrages. Most of the songs are approximately one and a half minutes long and are packed in a corrosive blender, and have a devastating effect.

The filthy old-school grinding abrasion is prominent on “Infinite Onslaught” which is one of the longest songs. The drumming work manages to come near perfection, even when the hyper intensity is much focused throughout the album, this kind of balance captures the pure grindcore style.

Besides the technical skills, precision, and the homogenous nature of the songs, the barbaric trademark is one highlight of this killer album, and the trail of brutality ensures filthy and orgasmic climaxes on “Legacy of Terror” and “Technologist Hell Future” offer sonic chaos.

In addition to the grind core elements, the band hovers over the ominous death-doom style at the very end of the album. The vocals are quite sinister, and it’s arguably rare to be found on any modern death-grind albums; therefore, “Grinding Mechanism of Torment” is packed full of aggression and stands tall on its brutal elements.

Other shorter songs like “Dead Dog”, “Horrible Earth Death”, and “Sniper Nest” manage to stand out despite their short length of the songs, even when the songs reach fast tempos.

…Into Cold Deaf Universe” is the final track which is stretched to six minutes long, it simply exudes classic death-doom riffs; the music reflects the style of Mortiferum but here the band creates a slow and crushing ominous sound then switches to merciless blasting assault and fiery dynamics.
