Impetuous Ritual – Iniquitous Barbarik Synthesis

Australia’s death metal act Impetuous Ritual released its fourth album “Iniquitous Barbarik Synthesis” on May 12th, 2023 via Profound Lore Records. Emerging from the veiled obscurity to be foisted upon the Australian underground scene with renowned bands such as Portal and Grave Upheaval. The new record elevates the tier of songwriting beyond what the band had achieved in the last effort, “Blight Upon the Martyred Sentient”.

Right from the opening track, “Sanguinary Abstraction” delivers a murky and ominous atmosphere, with the potent drums bludgeoning the hell out of you. Its murky guitar tones create multiple layers of chunky riffs, suffocating you slowly with the belching guttural growls. “Iniquitous Barbarik Synthesis” is a well-written album and to some degree, I find the songs quite immersive. The sense of terrifying wickedness and the penetrating thick chunks reveals crafty rhythm guitars that contribute to the song composition, with an atmosphere that surrounds you with a sense of awe.

Treading through the gates of occultism Impetuous Ritual wields enormous force, and they are able to convey energetic bludgeoning power, in terms of the riffing the guitars have the force to smash mountains into piles of shattering stones. The music is in line with bands like Portal, and I am not surprised by the fact that the lineup feature members of Portal and Grave Upheaval. Bringing their ultra-bludgeoning on the shortest tracks like “Lecherous Molestation” and “Rite of Impalement” the band strikes like a destructive machine.

There is no escape from the unhinged brutality that the band strikes upon the listener, the scathing tone of the guitars will make the walls tremble in your room, the drumming is so powerful and relentless that devastate your ears. The ominous atmosphere is reinforced by the dense sound of the distorted riffs, sucking you deep into the abysmal sonic vacuum of hell on the track “Necromantic Esurience”. While there are some dark moments that bring some slow guitar twists, the drums deliver a demonic vibe with its heavy performance combining massive blast beats and double bass kicks. Yet at the same time, there are plenty of tempo shifts on tracks like “Grail of Enmity” which is a three-minute smasher of ultra-heaviness.

The guitars emit all sorts of cacophonous displays of shock, conveying a complete gamut blackened by the grimy slow burn riffs. Impetuous Ritual draws you into the mouth of the abyss, leaving you breathless with the dreaded noises, though the band has increased the intensity of its sonic brutality invoking a sense of fright and awe. The first five tracks of the album offer the obscure form of primordial death metal and deliver an unstoppable flurry of blast beats. Furious riffs combine tremolo pickings and insane chunks of distorted guitars and the bass adds up to the thunderous cacophony.

Suddenly, the streaming rhythm currents spread like volcanic eruptions in “Intramural Axiom”. The deluges of the blasting drums are played at a rapid pace and convey brutal fills, in contrast to the blistering riffs the second half of the album offers the morbid and sadistic nature of the band. With that being said, we stumble upon the longest track “Psychic Necrosis” which is a twelve-minute of deep immersing sonic composition that lets you enter into the obscure veil of darkness. Impetuous Ritual intricately utilizes the right amount of chilling ambiance, while the focus on dynamics is less as the slow intonation of the wicked utterance of the growls deepens. The ominous riffs are imbued with a dark, suffocating atmosphere and saturated with the slow pacing of the drums that venture into the domains of death doom metal.

Sacreligious Penance” continues at the same pace as the previous track, and becomes too fast and obscure in some tempos with its morbid otherworldly rhythms. The creeping sensation is brimming with unearthly supernatural ambiance and somehow serves as a grim intro to the final track, “Metempsychosis”. The guitars play a counterpoint to the growing eeriness, and it comes in line with the methods of the band Portal. The drums accelerate the patterns that somehow configure the pacing between sporadic blasts and double bass explosions and crawl into a surging storm, bringing closure to this wicked album.
