The album opens with the title track itself; Power Train. You hear an old school train sound. You know, the old steam engines. Then the voice of Tommy Johansson comes in, and you’ll hear what you expect from a power metal album. It has a steady pace, full of fast palm muted power chords and amazing clean vocals. This song tells you about the power train, both the name of the song, but also the album itself seems to be a power train blasting through everything just judging by this first song. No Pain, No Gain hints back to the previous song if you’ll listen to the melody the lead guitar plays. The song is fast-paced in the chorus, while the verses are more melodic and fluent. Before you know it, the song is over. It does sound a bit repetitive, though. Maybe that’s because of the “choppy” melody that’s used in the chorus.
Battle Cry comes storming for you. This one does have a different vibe. It’s still fast but creates a greater feeling, meaning the song’s instrumentals show more aggression, more sure of itself, ready to win the battle. The fast guitar parts and solos are amazing on this one and got me hooked on the album again after my mind wandered off a bit with the previous song. Megatrue opens with a bass this time. It feels very different from the other songs we’ve already heard. It takes a slower pace, but keeps marching on. It tells its story with passion, and you’re hooked to it. I love the build-up throughout the song, then the solo is just the cherry on the cake.
My Epic Dragon welcomes you with a heroic sounding into. Then the guitars create the feeling that you’re riding a horse towards a magical castle. The way they are being played creates the perfect atmosphere for this song. Tommy’s voice just sounds magical; very pure and clean. And what a huge range his voice has as well. Thunder Power has a fast melody that opens the song on electric guitar. Tommy’s voice is rather mysterious on this one. In the chorus, the feeling comes back that it is a bit repetitive. Nevertheless, a very entertaining song with pure power metal elements; The high-pitched vocals near the end of the song are simply amazing.
A Story in the Night opens with a choir on a bed of mysterious music, followed up by the band coming in with fast palm muted power chords. This beautiful story uses its instruments to create a magical feeling for the story to be told by.
“Far away beyond the darkest sky
You hear an ancient, secret cry that tells a story in the night
One by one, they’re falling down
The light will soon be gone
But still you feel when they warn usAnd when the night is here, you’ll see a light appear
On mountain high, more lights up here
Then run away, they show a warning of what danger lies ahead”
Go Higher has a synth opening with what seems to be some violins in the background. But soon, the song goes back to its heroic centre. The guitars take a pause in the first chorus, and we just hear Tommy with bass and drums. The song feels a bit held back, and I found myself distracted from what was really going on. This one could have used some more variety. Victorious blasts out of your speakers right from the start. The beat used is very catchy and upbeat. It creates a feeling that you can do anything, hence the title is very fitting. I like the ending, where a part of the song is played on acoustic guitars. It creates a campfire feeling, singing the song together after you have been victorious together. There’s even a can being opened in the end, the details are amazing. Closer Alliance Anthem starts strong; a strong riff, a little solo, a heavy metal scream, … This song is last but not least. A great closer for a strong album!
Majestica shows true power metal. It often has a magical touch to it, but it also sometimes feels a bit repetitive. Nevertheless, this album shows its skills, and I’ve enjoyed most of the songs to the fullest. If you are into the classic power metal, Majestica is something for you. It doesn’t go away from the script of power metal, which is why I got distracted sometimes. But man, what a voice Tommy has; he has such a huge range and can do one of the best heavy metal screams I’ve ever heard. The guitars are often fast and provide great solo’s as well.
Majestica is touring in the summer, and they are playing for instance this year’s Alcatraz festival in Kortrijk. Be sure to check them out to experience the magic for yourself.
