Perishing – Malicious Acropolis Unveiled

After a pretty decent demo ‘Lutum’ Transcending Obscurity, underground savy record label from India picked up this Costa Rican death doom troupe. Perishing’s debut album ‘Malicious Acropolis Unveiled’ fulfills on the promise of those initial recordings.

Death doom as a genre can span a pretty wide variety of styles. You can go for the gothic romanticisim of Anathema, My Dying Bride or Celestial Season or go how the more visceral variants like Hooded Menace, Mortiferum or Disembowelment or anything in between, depending on how the mix between the death and the doom is balanced.

Perishing is clearly leaning much more on the death side than the doom. That awesome old school, black white and red cover, kind of lets you in on that in advance and they definitely deliver on those expectations.

From the opening notes this is about as doomy as it gets with the buzzing tritones resounding straight out of Black Sabbath’s legendary intro. The guitar tone is super thick and heavy, the vocals are abysmally deep and the tempo meanders mostly between morose dirges and lethargic death marches. Occasionally it will build up to erupt in short bursts brutality, although I would admit that this is not the band’s strong suit. You want them to stretch out each note to its breaking point, agonized in wordless screams. Lyrically, with tiles like ‘Castle of the Leached Body’ or ‘Devoured by the Cavernous Worm’, you can pretty much see the blood and gory dripping. Not a place for frilly shirts or gothic dresses.

If you’re into the Asphyx’ style of slowed down death metal or don’t mind getting your hands dirty when digging the doom, then there’s pretty much zero chance you’re not going to absolutely revel in Perishing’s first full length ‘Malicious Acropolis Unveiled’.

Definitely not on the romantic side of death doom, this is one solid slab of old school, carnivorous death doom metal with awesomely deep guttural vocals.
