The themes of cosmic darkness shroud the listener, “Dimension: Daemonium” is a supreme black metal album that maintains the symphonic muse of sophomore “Reign in Supreme Darkness” and “The Nighthold”; the orchestral arrangements blistering tempos, offering a swagger of cosmic symphonic majesty. The sheer power of tremolo-picked riffs and the swirling symphonies are unfolded on “Intro (Thy Daemonium)”, where the synth adds a cold atmosphere to this ambient opening, but with a more majestic and grandiose flair flawlessly displayed on “Ablaze Upon the Nocturnal Realms”.
The incessant bombardment of drums and guitar sound rawer and faster, while the synth creates a cosmic theme, beautifully providing a symphonic atmosphere. The choral is one of the standouts brought to an epic scale; Werwolf‘s high-pitched black metal vocals fit perfectly with the swirling synth.
Since the debut album “Netherstorm“, Vargrav‘s majestic flair drew inspiration from the aesthetics of 90s black metal, a la Odium, Emperor, and Limbonic Art. The six tracks portray a fine orchestral arrangement that creates a dense, mysterious atmosphere. The album’s highlight, “Moonfrost Storms”, is full of bombastic, aggressive riffs and symphonic transitions that shimmer with a whole cinematic scene of vast galaxies.
The omnipresent synth and the cold riffing unveil a sublime musical landscape; drumming is fast with blistering tempos and slower passages, integrating multi-cosmic effects. The guitars are distinctly different from the band’s previous work; they sound powerful and raw. Other bands that may have influenced Vargrav, such as Sirius and Obsidian Gate, are projected in the symphonic flair of V-Khaoz‘s musical works.
Often, tempos move at a slower pace, the gloomy synth provides multilayered textures, then a full fury of a tempest is unleashed, followed by scorching riffs and grim symphonic keyboards. The magical conjuration on “Dragons of Nightmare” offers an epic and cosmic voyage into space. The classic symphonic style integrates with the musical art of V-Khaoz; the spoken words and orchestral elements play a pivotal role in making the songs more memorable, offering a melodic experience.
“Dimension: Daemonium” offers an astral ride into starry realms and captivates with its enchanting, majestic appeal that transcends beyond its peers in symphonic black metal today. “The Gates of My Dimension” instills a dark mood, with the layers of synth providing an ambient soundscape. The slower passages and the capturing elements of grim screeching and icy aggressive riffs fit perfectly well with the theme.
The abrasive delivery of the drums strengthens the cold and dark atmosphere on “Bleeding Galaxies”; the keyboards give you chills. V-Khaoz’s oeuvre crosses new boundaries this time; the way he utilizes synth lines is in the vein of classic second-wave style; his songwriting expertise explores vast, crafted melodies and magical art.
The riffs are dark and provide a backdrop to the swirling synth patterns laden with grim, sinister screeches. The spacey atmosphere swirls like a vortex, ebbing and flowing organically through blast beats and celestial soundscapes, while the abrasive tremolo-picked riffs unleash fury. There is also a powerful reverb in the guitar tone and the drums echoing like a thunderstorm through the cosmic dust.
These elaborated elements and musical landscapes alternate between atmospheric and grandiose symphonic sections in “Starlight Chalice”. The eerie synth parts have an orchestral appeal that somehow reminds me of Limbonic Art albums like “Moon in the Scorpio” and “In Abhorrence Dementia”. The haunting crescendos manifest at all times, and the tempo evolves into a maelstrom of cosmic chaos, with powerful, saturated guitars and demonic effect vocals adding a magical feel; the cold atmosphere flows well. The accursed symphony intensifies on the closing track “Enslavement of Lunar Prophecies”, the tremolo-picked riffs laying the groundwork for this majestic closure.
The darker tone of the vocals and the grim, mesmerizing melodies stand out, bringing in an epic, somber atmosphere. The songs have more depth, especially the synth lines, which provide fills and a splendor akin to Scandinavian black metal. The melodies blaze gloriously over a backdrop of guitar strings and slow drums in the final moments of this track, presenting dexterity that cannot be overlooked.
