Alestorm – The Thunderfist Chronicles

Alestorm released their new album 'The Thunderfist Chronicles' on June 20, 2025! Alestorm is always in for a party and good music. Let's see what they cooked up for us this time.

Hyperion Omniriff starts off by strumming the same powerchord over and over again, but it’s made attractive by the pirate melody that’s played on top. After the first verse, the chords change, and we get a classic Alestorm chorus; fun pirate metal on solid riffs. This song gives it all in the classic formula. The scream vocals by keyboard player Elliot Vernon are in it as well, proving that the Alestorm formula creates the best songs. And so, the first 5 and a half minutes flew by. Killed to Death by Piracy opens with a solid bass line played by Gareth Murdock. All possible ways that a man can possibly die are told by the song. But some are killed to death by piracy instead of the natural reasons that people die. A fun song with fast drums and heavy low tuned riffs, that does want to make a point that piracy really kills bands or can kill them. It’s a hard time out there. Support the band and buy their stuff!

Banana is a semi electronic song with all kinds of beeps and boops between the guitars and the booze. It’s strange, and unexpected, but that’s what I like. Who knew electronic pirates sound amazing too? Another fun song with a fun title that have probably nothing to do with each other. Frozen Piss 2 was released earlier already. And no, there is no Frozen Piss 1 in existence that is known on this earth. There is a Japanese bridge in this song, sung by Shiori Sasaki. Furthermore, it’s a very fun pirate metal song. Not too heavy, no screams, but very enjoyable.

The Storm starts calm and very folky. After half a minute, the electric guitars take over, and we hear a palm muted riff with keyboard riffs in between. A calmer and wavy song that makes you move. Mountains of the Deep sounds very folk as well. It’s fun and about boobs. Giant boobs. Lol. Again, very fun and very pirate and very metal. And also the shortest song on the album.

Goblins Ahoy! has seagulls and a joke and a bit of storytelling with swords and screams until the instruments come out. This song follows the classical Alestorm formula again. A solid song with great riffs and melodies. Going from fast riffs to slower, lower tuned riffs filled with screams and fun. And a lot of “Lalala’s”. We have arrived at the last song already, called Mega-Supreme Treasure of the Eternal Thunderfist. The song is 17 minutes and 4 seconds long! First, we start off in a calm sea. Surrounded with nice weather and pretty things. The sounds of a violin can be heard with an acoustic guitar. Then we get the screams of Elliot Vernon on top of that calm environment, which creates a contrast within the song. Then we get to the heroic arc. The music gets somewhat faster and energetic. The first solo, played by guitarist Máté Bodor, is here too. Finally, we hear about the dreams of a skeleton. The vibe within the song switches back and forward very smooth. It takes you on a trip, where I just described only the first part of. It has so many different parts in it, yet it all fits together very well. Alestorm show their skills, they are not only fun, but also very good musicians.

I have laughed, banged my head and danced to this album. It is simply amazing. Alestorm brings music that can be enjoyed by everyone. It is simple; have fun and laugh, and don’t be so serious all the time. Yet also complex; the way the pace of the music changes within a song, the composition is extraordinary. I think Alestorm has outdone themselves on this one. It is just one big party for everyone, that is composed very carefully by them.
