Black metal and deathcore or also known as blackened deathcore. There are only a few bands that are masters in this concept that is not easy to mix. The band Ov Sulfur is one of them and we can add Discovery Through Torment to this list cause this EP kicks ass. We open wit a brutal piece that calls itself ‘Dethronement’ and they are a master in the black metal vibes. You could say a very descent black metal opener but you just hear throughout the song that the vibe is changing and we’re heading for something massive. And the venom is in it’s tail. The guitar is becoming slower and more gruesome. And out comes a brutal deathcore piece of breakdown. ‘Arcane Inception’ is sweeping it up a little bit going more brutal, more black metal blastbeats. This is a godless mix of black metal and brutal deathcore. These breakdown is more downbeated then the previous one but not slowing down, a direct switch with some blastbeats. This is organised chaos and we you think you have had enough you get another breakdown blasted in your face.
‘Veil Unfurling’ has the same structure. Starting off with some descent black metal but yet again throws some brutal deathcore breakdowns in the mix and you get these sickening EP sound that is just instant goosebumps. ‘Lesions’ is the first one to start with a deathcore sound and this is a song with a term that I have read before to name this band. It’s a certain genre that is called Slamcore. ‘First Encounter Assault Regiment’ has the same build up and you could say that it’s not that original. It’s good but it’s a bit too much of the same. Starting off from black metal and add some brutal breakdowns near the end to spice it up a little bit. If the find a way to get more original they could play with the big guys. But it’s still a descent EP.
I have heard a lot of deathcore in my life. A lot of deathcore that has been mixed with black metal. And that’s not an easy marriage. It’s a bumpy ride but this guys did a really good job. I just need something more and then we get to the good stuff. But still this EP kicks ass.
REVIEW SCORE
| 8 | The EP ‘Telesynthetic Rebirth’ is drenched in an ominous reds and desolate landscapes, mirrors the sonic and lyrical themes, hinting at the origins of the lone figure at its center and the chaos to come. |
