Dutch doom metal project Svjetlost announce debut album
Svjetlost, the new solo project of Jamie Kobić from Dutch post-metal collective Gavran, will release its debut album The Forever Silent on July 24 via Shadow of Sorrow Records.
Born during the isolation of the pandemic, what began as a desire to explore songwriting through guitar gradually evolved into a deeply personal work that blends the crushing weight of doom and stoner metal with the emotional richness of Sevdah, the traditional folk music of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Alongside the album announcement, Svjetlost has unveiled a teaser for the lead single “Above the Mountains,” offering a first glimpse into the project’s unique fusion of hypnotic riffs, vast atmospheres, and deeply rooted cultural influences. Check it out here.
While initially inspired by the heaviness of Sleep, High on Fire, and OM, the project soon found its true identity through Bosnian musical traditions, reimagining their melancholic melodies and expressive chord progressions through a heavy, riff-driven lens.
The album’s themes are equally personal. Lands of Suffering reflects on the scars of war and division, The Golden Lilies pays tribute to the historic city of Mostar, and Between the Peaks draws from Kobić‘s own family history, honoring ancestors whose lives were shaped by conflict, loss, and displacement.
Recorded by Freek van Rooyen (Gavran), mixed by Marius Prins (Throwing Bricks), mastered by Alan Douches, and featuring artwork by Tinus Kardolus, The Forever Silent transforms personal history into a powerful meditation on memory, identity, loss, and resilience.
By combining the hypnotic power of doom metal with the emotional depth of Bosnian musical heritage, Svjetlost delivers a debut album that feels both intimate and expansive, ancient and timeless.
The Forever Silent will be released on July 24 via Shadow of Sorrow Records.
