Having the otherworldly sinister hallmark at the core of songwriting, Germany’s Lovecraftian cosmic blackened/death metal Sulphur Aeon upped its sonic creation that resonated with the literature art of H.P. Lovecraft. Following the third dreadful opus “The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos”, which marked its ominous entry to the fictional horror of the Cthulhu universe, the fourth album “Seven Crowns and Seven Seals” is released by Ván Records on October 13th, 2023. And is a gateway where the quintet transcendence beyond sublimity. With the enthralling elements expanding into the supernatural themes and eerily mysterious atmosphere, Sulphur Aeon reveals a groundbreaking sonic mastery that captures the listener’s imagination and wraps its scaly tentacles around them.

With instrumental dexterity and technical aptitude, Sulphur Aeon crafts its diabolical Lovecraftian reverence to reflect a sense of awe and mystery in the opening intro “Sombre Tidings”. Just when the stars are right, the ultimate doom befalls us in this cosmic vale of majesty. Communing with the ancient, powerful leviathan of the deep ocean and introducing the Yoggothian theme amidst the maddening beating of the muffling drums in the following track “Hammer from the Howling Void”. The fascinating shimmering guitar melodies create a dark vortex that manifests tremendous potency, with the eldritch growls enhancing the swirling chaos and the titanic Tom-Tom of the drums. The atmosphere conjures up ominous images of unspeakable horror, and colossal riffs unleashing a potent embodiment of brutality.

Malefic clean vocal choruses soar to an epic crescendo, with the thundering riff serving as a background riddled with omnipresent chord-laden hooks. Ferocious drums build on with a deluge of monumental riffs imposing a demonic menace, from the brooding intro of “Usurper of the Earth and Sea”. The slow crawling pace of the crushing drums and the twisted Middle Eastern melodies paints a primordial landscape that captures the forbidden nameless city of Irem. Snarling growls swirling through the hooky guitars with a massive propelling percussion adding suspense to the magnitude of the riffing prowess.

Sulphur Aeon instills all of its blackened melodic trademarks in such measureless immensity and force as the churning tone of the opulent guitars unraveling eerie subtlety that delivers something of grandiosity and pushes the sonic ante into an atmospheric and vivid melodic black metal spectrum. The superb slinking of the explosive guitar solos lacks none of the songwriting skills from the sinister rhythm to the rumbling double bass drums.

The Yearning Abyss Devours Us” presents the ultimate blackened death metal sound of Sulphur Aeon and while it’s impossible to anticipate what monstrosities might follow after. The soul-chilling choruses are yet another feature of this otherworldly enchantment of the atmosphere, and the colossal burst of the maddening drum beats creates a crushing reverberation.

Harrowing growls booming to the rumble of the supersonic timbre of the drenched cosmic riffs, a burst of aggression demonstrates the wickedness of the sublime guitar work. To combine earth-shattering brutality with mammoth crawling riffs, there are cavernous growling segments that carry an epic, crushing sound throughout the album. “Seven Crowns And Seven Seals” conveys an otherworldly sense of might to the ancient creatures that lurk beneath the seas, a truly staggering sonic revelation of a menacing cosmic darkness. It is relentless as it is refined and profoundly sophisticated to staggering league, though on every song Sulphur Aeon blasts a leviathan soundtrack. The unnerving sense of esoteric melodies is at the forefront of the song the tempo shifts to mid-paced and ultra-fast percussion but beneath these layers, the tides of aggression are pushed straightforward.

The abominable growling sets a darker tone to the song “Arcane Cambrian Sorcery” and is perfectly extracted from “The Scythe of Cosmic Darkness” template which conjures an eldritch aesthetic of cosmic horror beings with the marching percussion depicting a menacing unearthly sensation. The awe of mysterious guitar rhythms, and the ponderous double bass, augmented by the rolling drums, add to the layers of the composition. The churning riffs and slow crawling drums evoke a constant sense of freight, but the catchy rhythm builds obscure guitar qualities that explore the in-depth and more effective by crafting some of the elements to be considered unique and unprecedented.

Adeptly precise, magnificent drum work and the infusion of the impeccable guitar chugging, chiseled tremolos riffs that are combined with snarling growls is something utterly remarkable and far more dreadful than most blackened death metal bands. Sulphur Aeon ventures into vast spaces of the cosmos as once again they have honed their craftsmanship to perfection.

This brings us to one of the album’s epic moments in the track “Seven Crowns and Seven Seals”, which shows the remarkably honed songwriting skills and the abundance of catchy hooks. This song is the band’s crowning achievement in culminating the dreadful themes where the synth backing ultimately presents a subtle layer to the vivid melodic ornaments as you’re constantly compelled to the blackened characteristic of the hypnotic guitar insertions, the ebbing of the storming drums set by the lofty arrangements and nuance of modern black metal. The mysterious atmosphere encapsulates you in a chilling ambiance, like an astral projection taking you on a voyage to spherical realms beyond space and time.

Backed by the sinister growling pulsating from the universe with abrasive riffs and constant melodies focusing on melancholy. The epic closure of “Beneath the Ziggurats” allows the listener to experience the ambient elements in the way that it delivers a colossal, gripping brutality. Churning streams of tremolos and the massive drumming employ a variety of fills and crushing might. The rolling thunder of the percussion brings weight to the churning riffs woven by ominous synth passages, chord-laden hooks, and majestic choruses layered over the malefic overtones drifting into monstrous brutality and emphasizing its inspiration to bands like Chapel of Disease and showcasing beautiful drumming patterns with the spacey guitar licks echoing in the background.
