Waste of Space Orchestra – Syntheosis

There is a curious story about the orgins of this  fantastically monikered Waste of Space Orchestra. What sense of humor those fins have. It didn’t start out a a regular band proper. Rather, it was supposed to be a one off event specifically commissioned for last year’s Roadburn festival. Made up of 2 Roadburn veteran acts, being the psychedelic drone doom of Dark Buddha Rising and the equally psychotropic black metal of Oranssi Pazuzu. We already knew that these guys liked working together from the radioactive, mutated abomination that is Atomikylä.

Waste of Space Orchestra took it all a step further with the whole of both bands coming together on an audience of 3000 psyched up spectators. For those lucky enough to have witnessed this magical ritual last spring, Syntheosis represented more than just a mish mash of both bands. It was a mind bending audiovisual spectacle that assaulted all your senses at once. Conceptually it centered around three archetypal players: the Shaman, the Seeker and the Possessor.

In their own words:

“A ceremony ends up in the opening of a portal, which sucks the three beings into an alien dimension, which is populated by brain-mutilating colour storms and ego-diminishing audio violence. Eventually the three are forced to reach equilibrium and melt their minds into one collective consciousness.”

Syntheosis, the album is not so much a live recording of said extra-dimensional evening but rather a studio reinterpretation, divided into 9 parts.

Like a concept album from beyond the wall of sleep, you shouldn’t single out any specific track, but strap yourself in for the whole intergalactic trip through the Innerverse of your subconsciousness.
