March 9th, 11 in the morning: Parkway Drive goes live on Facebook with the message that they’ll bring an intimate show at the AB Club… the next Tuesday. The ticket sales start immediately and 20 minutes later only 250 lucky fans can call themselves the owner of such a much wanted ticket.

March 13th, 3 in the afternoon: Parkway Drive releases their new single, The Void, a catchy metal song. If this is the preview of what is to come on the new record, Reverence, that’ll hit the shelves on May 4th, we can expect the Australians to be the ones closing the big metal festivals in a few years!

March 13th, 7 in the evening: the doors of the AB open and the crowd climbs a level towards the club. A small room with a stage of about forty centimeters high… of course without a fence like the good old times (luckily there are still some festivals that leave those barriers out!)

On this metalcore high day the British Polar (***) gets the honor to warm up the crowd. And that they did well! If it’s because of them or because of the ecstasy of what is to come still, we leave in the middle. But the guys definitely get the first rows in it with a couple of singalongs and some people are already moving a leg here and there. After about half an hour Polar finishes their set and we get to look forward to the main event while kept warm with a bunch of “nostalgic” metal classics, kudos to the dj!

At nine o’clock on the dot, the lights die out and the intro of Wishing Wells starts (a live debut), the first single that Parkway Drive (**** 1/2) released as a preview of Reverence. The track gets shouted along to from start to finish, there’s movement in the crowd and the temperature shoots up at lightning speed! The focus of the set is rather the 10th anniversary of Horizons, six of the fourteen songs of the set have been picked from that album. And this is a fact that gets received oh so well by the fans. Not a bit surprise that the biggest pits came to life during tracks like Boneyards and Dead Man’s Chest. Halfway the set the tempo goes a bit down when they played The Void (also a live debut). The song has been online for barely half a day and it’s clear that, in contradiction to Wishing Wells, these lyrics aren’t as well memorized yet. The binding texts of frontman Winston McCall overflow with gratefulness for everything he accomplished with this band. For a short moment he gets a bit emotional when he tells us about an ear surgery he underwent 3 weeks ago. The fear was there that something could wrong, possibly causing him to never again be able to perform. This intimate show is clearly not just for the handful of fans a very special night! The Aussies close with Crushed and Bottom Feeder, for one last time every bit of energy, every leftover bit of voice and every drip of sweat claimed by the kings of metalcore!

That a band like Parkway Drive after all these years and very big stages goes back to small, intimate shows, we can only praise. And hopefully other bands follow their example. Sadly, the other side of the medal is that there’s every time a big group of fans that stay behind with empty hands. But no worries, Friday June 22nd these guys return to our country to play at Graspop Metal Meeting (besides an extensive list of other summer festivals), where there’s plenty of room for everyone!

13 maart, 15 uur: Parkway Drive releaset hun nieuwe single, The Void, een catchy metalsong. Als dit de voorbode is van wat er volgt op de nieuwe plaat, Reverence, die op 4 mei in de rekken ligt, dan mogen we de Australiërs binnen een aantal jaar verwachten als afsluiters van de grote metalfestivals!

13 maart, 19 uur: de deuren van de AB gaan open en het publiek stijgt een verdiep richting de club. Een kleine zaal met een podium van zo’n veertig centimeter hoog… uiteraard zonder dranghekkens zoals in de goede oude tijd (gelukkig zijn er nog steeds festivals die de barrières laten voor wat ze zijn!)

Op deze metalcorehoogdag krijgt het Britse Polar (***) de eer om het publiek op te warmen. En dat doen ze goed! Of het aan hen ligt of aan de extase voor wat komen zou, laten we in het midden. Maar de Britten krijgen in ieder geval de eerste rijen mee met een aantal singalongs en sommigen schudden al rustig de beentjes los. Na een half uurtje houdt Polar het voor bekeken en is het uitkijken naar het hoofdprogramma onder begeleiding van een aantal “nostalgische” metalklassiekertjes, pluspuntje voor de dj!

Klokslag negen uur doven de lichten en start de intro van Wishing Wells (een live debuut), de eerste single die Parkway Drive (**** 1/2) heeft gereleased als voorsmaakje van Reverence. Het nummer wordt van begin tot einde luidkeels meegebruld, er is beweging en de temperatuur schiet pijlsnel omhoog! De nadruk van de set ligt echter op het tienjarig bestaan van Horizons, zes van de veertien nummers van de set worden uit dat album geplukt. En dit wordt maar al te hartelijk onthaald door de fans. De grootste pits ontstaan dan ook bij nummers als Boneyards en Dead Man’s Chest. Halverwege de set gaat de vaart er eventjes uit toen The Void (eveneens een live debuut) werd gebracht. Het nummer staat nog geen halve dag online en het valt op dat, in tegenstelling tot Wishing Wells, deze tekst nog niet zo goed is gememoriseerd. De bindteksten van frontman Winston McCall lopen over van dankbaarheid voor wat hij met deze band al allemaal heeft bereikt. Eventjes gaat hij de emotionele kant op wanneer hij vertelt over een ooroperatie die hij drie weken eerder heeft ondergaan. De angst zat erin dat er iets zou misgaan, waardoor hij misschien nooit meer had kunnen optreden. Deze intieme show is dus niet enkel voor het handjevol fans een heel speciale avond! Afsluiten doen de Aussies met Crushed en Bottom Feeder, nog een keer wordt elk stukje energie, elk overschotje stem en elk druppeltje zweet opgeëist door de koningen van de metalcore!

Dat een band als Parkway Drive na al die jaren en heel grote podia nog eens teruggrijpt naar kleine, intieme shows, kunnen we alleen maar toejuichen. En hopelijk volgen andere bands dit voorbeeld. De keerzijde van de medaille is echter dat er steeds een grote hoop fans met lege handen achterblijft. Maar niet getreurd, vrijdag 22 juni staan deze mannen terug op Graspop (naast een hele reeks andere zomerfestivals), waar er net ietsje meer plaats is!
