Interview Bloodred Hourglass – “It’s a pissed off record really”

We’ve seen so many different iterations of Bloodred Hourglass since we started to cover the Finnish scene more intensely. And now they are stepping into yet another new chapter with their new album ‘We Should Be Buried Like This’, and the band couldn’t be more excited—or more honest—about where they stand creatively. In a recent conversation, they shared laughs, reflections, and plenty of insight into how this record came together and what it represents for them.

The band wrapped up recording by the end of 2024, meaning they’ve been sitting on the finished material for about a year. Yet the energy still feels fresh. “It’s always exciting times just before the album release. You start getting the first bits of feedback, and that’s when it all becomes real.” They’ve already begun sketching out ideas for the next record, proving that their creative engine never really stops.

The new album’s title, ‘We Should Be Buried Like This’, carries the sort of haunting poetry fans have come to expect from the band. Asked about its meaning, they laughed off the idea of pinning it down too neatly. “Maybe it’s about closure, or legacy, or memory—or all of them,” Jaredi mused. “That’s the fun part. There are a lot of meanings in there.”

Musically, the record continues to blend heaviness with atmosphere, building on the electronic textures they first introduced on ‘How’s the Heart?’. This time, though, the mix feels more confident and mature. “We kind of found the frames where we work best,” they explained. “We didn’t set strict boundaries, but we know what feels like us.” The result is an album that sounds both massive and natural, heavy yet spacious.

For the first time, Bloodred Hourglass brought in an outside producer, a decision that shaped the songs in subtle but powerful ways. “He made little tweaks,” they said, “but those small things made the songs breathe more. They don’t sound overplayed anymore.” One of the highlights of the process was watching certain songs transform in the studio. “God Has Favorites wasn’t even in our top ten demos,” they admitted, “but once the vocals went in, it just clicked. Suddenly we knew—yeah, this is going to be a killer track.”

They also experimented with guest vocals for the first time, adding a new melodic dimension. “We wanted something fresh, a female voice felt like the right choice, and it worked perfectly out of the box.”

Now, with release day approaching, the band is looking ahead to an extensive European and Finnish tour. “We’ve got 16 shows across Europe, and then a bunch of weekends in Finland—around 30 shows in total,” they shared enthusiastically. Picking a setlist from seven albums isn’t easy, but they’ve learned to trust both their instincts and their fans. “We check what people are listening to on Spotify, but we also like to bring back some deeper cuts. You can’t please everyone—but you can surprise them.”

As for what they’re most looking forward to playing live? There’s immediate agreement: ‘Shun the Limelight’. “It’s going to be killer,” they said with a grin.

The conversation wrapped up on a light note, with talk of post-tour comforts. When asked about the best Finnish food to come home to, the band didn’t hesitate: rye bread and salmon soup. “It’s the perfect combo,” they laughed. “That’s how you know you’re home.”

And as always, they left fans with a simple message: “Come to the live shows, buy merch, order the album. The holy triangle!”
