Wednesday 13 – Mid Death Crisis

The Duke of Spook, Wednesday 13 is back with a bang, unleashing his 10th record 'Mid Death Crisis' via Napalm Records going back to where it all started for him. Like the Duke of Spook himself describes it as a fun, campy, “leave-your-brain-at-the-door” release and a true return to his horror punk roots and we as fans love it!

‘Mid Death Crisis’, a play on words, which according to our interview with Duke of Spook himself, describes the point he is in his life and came to be as a joke. He has made it clear that he loves to write stuff that makes him laugh, and that is evident both in the album title and in the opening track, ‘Decease and Desist’A fantastic starter telling the listeners to buckle up for a fun, thrilling, gore-filled ride. Following the opener comes a song that as a stand-alone single really succeeded and really can be identified from the bunch, ‘When The Devil Commands’, which in my honest opinion might be one of the best songs Wednesday 13 has ever written. Heavy hitting riffs, a real break from all the punk elements in the album and brilliant songwriting which clearly translates to live performances, inciting crowds to sing “666” while the Duke of Spook commands you on stage.

The rest of the ”A-side” of the album are instant horror punk classics. Tracks like ‘Rotting Away’ – which might be also one of the finest songs we’ve heard from Wednesday 13 ever – and ‘Decapitation’ really remind me of Muderdolls with their tongue in cheek lyrics that will actually make you laugh while listening and super catchy riffs. Also containing the ferocious hard rock track ‘No Apologies’ featuring non other than Taime Downe from Faster Pussycat.

Rolling through to the ”B-side” of the album after one of his single releases ‘In Misery’ which slows down the record and comes in just the right place because we aren’t slowing down for long! ‘Blood Storm’ is one solid-ass punk song, the riff reminding me of The Exploited, this is the creme de la creme of the whole album and one of my all-time favorite songs ever from Wednesday 13. I personally think this song perfectly encapsulates Wednesday 13‘s style of songwriting. This song is a train that doesn’t stop, doesn’t take prisoners, and doesn’t give an F.

After the massacre that is ‘Blood Storm’ is time to take a little breather with ‘Xanaxtasy’ and ‘I Hurt You’ while being that campy style of lyrics, these almost seem like personal songs and sounds something that would really resonate with fans, especially ‘My Funeral’ which is almost a beautiful horror song that would actually speak to someone but still staying true to the style of Wednesday 13. One of the better tracks for sure in this album. After these almost personal sounding songs, it’s time to end the album like we started, middle fingers in the air, again really having a true Murderdolls sound which I absolutely love with ‘Sick and Violent’. This is a perfect ending song for a top to bottom brilliant album.
