Juliet Ruin channels psychological rebellion in explosive video ‘Reactance Theory’

Modern Metal

Canadian metal outfit Juliet Ruin has dropped their electrifying second single and music video “Reactance Theory,” off their upcoming EP “Regime,” set to release November 7, 2025. Known for their genre-fluid blend of chunky riffs, soaring melodies, and emotionally raw lyricism, Juliet Ruin is back with what may be their most collaborative and high-energy track to date.

“Reactance Theory” explores the psychological concept coined by Jack Brehm, which explains why people resist threats to their personal freedom. The song dives into the dopamine-fueled impulses that drive rebellion, wrapped in a belted, catchy vocal performance that came together in a moment of serendipity. Vocalist Jess Fleming mistook the verses for the chorus during the writing process, resulting in a track that’s relentlessly energetic from start to finish.

“This song came together with a lot of input from each member. Wes brought in the initial hook guitar lead, and we built it piece by piece. It’s probably one of the most collaboratively written songs we’ve ever done,” says the band.

The accompanying music video amplifies the song’s themes with visceral visuals and dynamic performance shots, capturing the band’s signature live energy and studio-tight execution.

Formed in 2015, Edmonton, AB’s Juliet Ruin has steadily carved out a space in the modern metal scene with a sound described in five words: chunky, groovy, pretty, powerful, and catchy. Drawing influence from Spiritbox, Jinjer, Scion, and Alexisonfire, the band continues to evolve, growing heavier, more technical, and more emotionally resonant with each release.

Their EP “Regime” is a five-track journey through vulnerability, empowerment, and social reflection. From the introspective depths of “Chrysalis” and “Poems by a Poltergeist” to the explosive title track “Regime,” the EP balances brutal breakdowns with pop-infused melodies and unfiltered emotion. The artwork, created by Feen Murray, uses abstract imagery of skulls and hearts to reflect the tension between emotionality and overthinking.

“This EP is everyone’s favorite so far. We’ve struck a good balance between our heaviest subject matter and our most vulnerable moments,” the band shares.

Juliet Ruin’s writing process is deeply collaborative, with guitarists crafting riffs and Jess shaping them into emotionally raw songs drawn from her personal journals. Live, the band delivers a high-octane performance that rivals their studio recordings, with Jess’s vocals standing out for their precision and passion.
