Amaranthe – The Catalyst

Amaranthe has released their sixth studio album on February 23, 2024. We already got 5 singles before the release date that gave us an idea of what this album would bring. Lets check those and the rest of the album out!

Find Life is the last song on the album, but the first single of that came out for this album way back in October 2022. This is a song they made without a screamer, and I have to say that even with just the two clean vocalists, the song sounds amazing. Though it is their signature sound to work with three singers, and I do think that makes this band whole.
Damnation Flame came out in June 2023, a powerful song that also shows off their new screamer Mikael Sehlin for the first time. The song takes a pause in the middle to show off a cirque like sounding break, leading up to a nice instrumental part. This awesome piece gets finished by Mikael. After that, the song goes back where it was and gives us one last chorus.

Next up was single Insatiable. The track starts off with a nice beat right from the start. The poppy vibe comes through in this one, creating a nice mix of melodic power metal with pop elements.
Outer Dimensions feels a lot lighter than the previous singles. It sounds higher and has some more synth elements in it.

Machinery has taken over and the only ones that can save us are Amaranthe. The intro of Re-Vision is promising. The song tells us about being able to make a change if you have a vision how to do it. A steady and firm song using the classic Amaranthe formula; power metal infused with synth sounds here and there.

“Maybe there’s a light at the end of the line, or just a concept, a vision to improve it”.

Opener The Catalyst starts mysterious and introduces each of the band members in the video clip. One hard strum on the electric guitar and a scream open this song and the album. A bit later Elise and Nils join in with clean vocals and Mikael with scream vocals. The chorus has this catchy beat, and the album has a strong lift-off.
Liberated starts off strong and powerful in the verses. The chorus is lighter and more poppy, creating a great mix of different styles in the Amaranthe formula.

It looks like Interference starts of slow and calm, but a few seconds later, these short guitar strums and synths on a bed of low drums change all that. The song continues with short powerful strums and definitely give the song tile its meaning.
Stay a Little While brings you a piano intro. The drums get added later, but the guitar stays away for a bit. Elise and Nils take the lead on this one. This ballad is beautifully brought. It once again shows the different styles that Amaranthe has to offer. This album contains powerful songs that are loud and clear. But then again, the album also has this song. The electric guitar joins in for the chorus and gives the song one more dimension to add to its core.

Ecstasy pumps us up once again. Another strong song that makes great use of the three singers’ different styles and vibes.
The instruments on Breaking the Waves really give the impression of waves in the verses. It fades out a bit and comes back strong and loud every few seconds. The chorus stays solid, like Amaranthe has mastered the wave and is riding it.
Resistance starts with great vocal performances of all three singers, releasing the beast with a ‘lets go!‘ scream by Mikael. The song has a strong beat that keeps you hooked to the song.

Wow, this album has a lot to offer. It makes great use of the different voices of the three singers and create different styles with it throughout the album, yet staying true to their own style. Amaranthe define their own genre of music. This album has power metal and symphonic metal mixed with pop vibes and synths on top. It has fast songs, serious songs and slow(er) songs, creating an entertaining album full of things to discover.
