Chris Maragoth – Depths of Despair EP

Chris Maragoth has just released his new EP called 'Depths of Despair'. 2 songs we already know: 'History on Repeat' and 'Hidden Signs of Sadness'. Let's hear what the other 3 songs on this EP have to offer us!

‘History on Repeat’, the first single of this EP and the last song on the tracklist, was about a politically charged reflection on the global rise of far-right ideologies, social division, and the erosion of empathy. Like I quoted in my review about the song that you can read here. The song comes with a strong video that shows you how some things tragically do not change and repeat themselves.
Then came ‘Hidden Signs of Sadness’. It is an instrumental track that gives you images in your head while listening to the mixture of Gothic and symphonic metal combined with classical instruments such as the violin. This emotional song came with a video that shows Chris’ vision on his music and it is truly beautiful. You can read more about it in my review here.

Let’s get into the new songs on this EP with title track ‘Depths of Despair’. Lose piano notes start to form a melody with the cracking noise behind it of an old music player. Slowly, more instruments start to join, and it goes from a classical vibe to his signature sound: a mix between gothic and Symphonic metal with so many emotions hidden inside it. It has a raw side, but also a pure side. Yet, both seem to be touching each other in the middle and reach you simultaneously. Beautifully ending in a violin and piano melody, this track has taken you once again on an emotional coaster.

‘Looming Evil’ also starts with a piano. This one sounds a little higher than on the first track. It builds tension, curious what is to come. Other instruments slowly join, but you get the feeling that something is lurking around the corner. The music takes a pause and the consistency changes. It’s no longer a quiet, peaceful part, but it has a gradually faster pace with more lower notes. The electric guitar is still nowhere to be found on this track, which I did expect to hear it to be honest. A different genre, but it completely fits on this EP to complete the story it is telling.

‘Dance of the Damned’ also starts with a classical music track. It follows smoothly on the previous track and continues where that one has left off emotion wise. On the previous song, there was evil looming. Now, the damned have surfaced, and you can hear them dancing by the music that’s being played.

This EP is once again over before I know it. I love how this is different than anything I’ve heard before. It is very heavy, very classical or a mix of both. For some reason, it blends together perfectly. The music knows how to find a way to your deepest emotions somehow, even though I expected heavier music on the tracks that hadn’t been released as well.

I think his English press release describes it beautifully: “In a world of noise, Chris Maragoth’s music invites listeners to pause and to find clarity in melancholy”.

Chris‘ music has a gothic melodic metal base, but he is not afraid to experiment with the vibes of classical music too. And somehow, it puts everything together. So yeah, not as heavy as I expected, but just as beautiful as I remembered.

Chris is joined once again by Cherry Summerfield on vocals on ‘Depths of Despair‘ and ‘History on Repeat‘. On the other tracks, he is joined by violinist Sanya Smileska.
