Coffins – Beyond the Circular Demise

Extreme metal might sometimes be so concentrated on Europe and the Americas that you could be forgiven for not realizing that there is a long standing metal scene elsewhere in the world also. Case in this point is Japanese doom death outfit Coffins that has been bringing the doom for more than 2 decades.

Even though the band keeps its fan base pretty well fed with a steady high calorie diet of obscure splits and EPs, it has actually been no less than six years since these Japanese filthgrinders released their last a full length The Fleshland. That had been their debut on Relapse Records and they have stuck with them for their fourth hellspawn Beyond the Circular Demise.
Unhampered by any need for technical bravado, this horde from Tokyo does not bother about intricate structures, complex time signatures, virtuoso solos or anything of the sort. They just wants to smash skulls.

Their songs are not super-fast, or especially clever. Instead they are putrid, primordial creatures crawling out of some murky black swamp. Essentially, Coffins has taken the foulest doomy bits from Autopsy’s Mental Funeral and built a career out of it. That doesn’t mean all the tracks are slow all the way through. The opener Terminate by Own Prophecy kicks off to a nasty mid tempo chug before it slows down Asphyx style. The album keeps this yin and yang balance between stomping brutality and creepy crawls pretty much all the way through.

More than any other Japanese metal band I know, Coffins like to play live and do it quite often all around the world. They just toured through Europe, if you missed them, make sure you catch them a next time to get crushed! In the mean time, listen to their new work…
