The fifth album by the Chilean death metal quartet Unaussprechlichen Kulten (Unspeakable Cults) was released through the German underground label Iron Bonehead Productions on 18th of October. Teufelsbücher (Devil’s Book) is the title of their new album that brings their obscure style of death metal within the satanic boundaries. Unaussprechlichen Kulten has been fronting the Latin American underground metal scene since the year 1999. The band found its entry into the realm of Chthulu mythos by drawing the central themes from the American writer H.P. Lovecraft. Their uncanny ability and competence in bringing the Lovecraftian themes to music is what makes them exceptional. Unaussprechlichen Kulten is characterized by the cold and the dark churning atmosphere much of their music is a blend of early Immolation, Morbid Angel and Incantation. Even with this description there’s a unique quality and ingenuity in terms of music and talent.

Teufelsbücher is concluded in six long tracks which show the traditional style of this Chilean death metal band. From the creeping synth on the opening track The Evil Out of ControlUnaussprechlichen Kulten perfects their obscure modalities of old school death metal into a classic formulaic order of primordial death metal. They have built their signature sound and concept albums with their first full length album Wake Up in the Night of Wulpurgis and People of the Monolith. One of the attributes of this obscure band is the association and the pure fascination for creating a horrific sound. These prime elements which differentiate them from other Latin American death metal bands. Unaussprechlichen Kulten‘s way of playing death metal is brutal and sinister, although the similarities between them and the German death metal outfit Sulphur Aeon is sparse.

Both of these respectful bands crawl from the realm of Chthulu, but each of them has its approach to the musical sense. On the second track Keziah Lilith Medea the guitars focus on creating a menacing and sinister atmosphere. While in other moments the guitars produce different rhythm simultaneously to captivate the listener. There are complex aspects when it comes to the flow of the music including the technical talent. Coarse vocals that leads into a tumult of dissonance and crushing drums that produce rhythmic patterns. The intricate guitar arrangements on Cranquiluria is a highlight track brought by different variations and melodic solos. The album is rife with tremolo pickings and dissonance but things even gets nastier on the following track. Search and an Evocation plunges into the old school brutality with drums firing the blast beats. Navigating through brutal death metal and nuances of black metal the track becomes heavier in one moment then veers into mid tempo.

Other attributes related to the band is the expansion of sound which attracts the listener and the horror based album covers related to
ancient satanic cults. However the latest offering is yet another eerie and brutal album although the musical contents here aren’t very different from the previous album “Keziah Lilith Medea”. Unaussprechlichen Kulten gradual expansion and consistency shows a firm approach towards originality. Which began to materialize on their third full length album Baphomet Pan Shub-Niggurath which displayed the old school fragmentation of brutal death metal and some hints to black metal.

Teufelsbücher is a twisting album that slithers smoothly through different tempo styles, each track on the album creates a horrifying theme. The synth is used on number of tracks to intensify the atmosphere the band possesses an incredible level of talent. The guitars unleash frantic set of solos and tremolos providing different tones including dissonance. Their peculiar
flair for death metal and overwhelming talent isn’t devoid of quality
by the fifth track Flapping Membraneous Wings.

They introduce uncanny rhythms, chaotic solos that carries the track with fierceness of the fast tempo and feverish riffs. The thrilling synth on the eight minutes closing track Necromancy and Torment opens the track with such suspenseful moments. When the drums transforms the finale into one hell of a brutal death metal track. Harmonies and gloomy melodies all seems to be poured into the massive cauldron. To be ignited by the rapid fire of the blast beats and roaring growls, Teufelsbücher is very brutal and ambiguous album. Rightfully mastered by the Chilean occultists who has released another massive record inspired by the Lovecraftian mythos.
