For years, Flagg were one of Finnish black metal’s most unsung gems. Rotten and regal, the band is the work of two scene veterans: selfsame multi-instrumentalist Flagg, who was a part of reanimated old Finnish cult Annihilatus, and vocalist Tyrant, whose hordes include the esteemed likes of Malum, Infernarium, and Kalmankantaja. Together, Flagg‘s two full-lengths – 2020’s Nothing But Death and 2021’s Cosmic Chaos Manifest, both released under the banner of Purity Through Fire – flew in the face of prevailing Finnish paradigms, presenting an ultraviolence largely steeped in the ancient ’90s whilst evincing a palatable sort of modernity. However, with the release of 2025’s Diabolical Bloodlust, a new / old fire awoke and manifested in a stylistic shift: an authentic throwback to mid / late ’90s melodic black metal of a most blastbeaten nature. Flagg were now firmly on the tongues of the wider underground.
Striking while the iron’s still hot, Flagg return with their fourth full-length, Death Sermon. Thankfully, the duo hardly deviate from the gleam & grime of Diabolical Bloodlust – ripping riffs are stacked a mile high, melodies are literal frozen fire, and the intensity is absolutely berserker – but there’s a touch of development across all elements. Most auspiciously, they are joined here by erstwhile Malum / Infernarium guitarist Valthor and Polish drum-beast Krzysztof Klingbein. These session musicians’ contributions to the rigorous Flagg aesthetic cannot be overstated: the melodicism becomes more majestic whilst losing none of that poisonous bite, and the slipstreaming rhythmic intensity is fluid to the extreme. As such, the songwriting across Death Sermon becomes more expansive than its predecessor’s overwhelming-yet-entrancing template, particularly in the extremely subtle synths applied to a production that’s shimmering crystal and rusty chainsaw alike. Those who hold cult such late ’90s touchstones as On Twilight Enthroned, Towards the Skullthrone of Satan, Lords of the Nightrealm, At the World of Untrodden Wonder, and Onwards to the Spectral Defile should find bountiful tundras on which to roam in Death Sermon. Those who know, know, and Flagg most definitely KNOW…still!
