Interview Diamond Rowe (Tetrarch) – “Playing live is our bread and butter, we always give everything we got!”

Tetrarch blew us away already in 2021, when they released ‘Unstable‘, their Napalm Records debut and an absolute killer of an album, bringing back the heydays of nu metal. And they’ve been continuously named as one of the frontrunners of the new wave of nu metal ever since. Now they’re releasing their follow-up to that album with ‘The Ugly Side of Me‘, solidifying their talent and promise towards the world, bringing them to Europe for the very first time for a proper tour. About time we caught up with Diamond Rowe (lead guitar, backing vocals) and have a chat about everything…

When getting on the call with Diamond, she’s in her car right outside the Tetrarch rehearsal space where they were about to get ready for the upcoming tours, with a first European tour ever. It’s a pretty exciting time for them, because they were just about to release their new album ‘The Ugly Side of Me‘. People overall seemed hyped about the new music, including the ‘Never Again (Parasite)’ track where Diamond for the first time ever had some parts where she was doing lead vocals instead of just backing vocals or harmonies. It worked out so well, that she’s pretty sure Josh (the main vocalist) won’t let her get away with never doing it again. But she’s totally up for doing it again if it fits the song, so that’s exciting to hear!

For the rest of the album, they didn’t really experiment much or did all that much different, it seems they mostly focused on writing a proper Tetrarch album. They did challenged their limits somewhat regarding songwriting and pushing certain elements like showing their industrial side more in certain tracks or adding a lot more layers and textures to the songs. Though making layered songs like that poses for an interesting dilemma on how to approach the music live. Diamond assured us that for now, they’ll very much stick to playing everything live and not putting any instruments in a backtrack, as they’ve never done that before. The only things you’ll find in the backtrack are the electronic samples. Diamond much rather picks which of the guitar layers is the more prominent one, or which will have the most impact live, and play that. Which has worked pretty well for now.

We also talk a bit about how they are being called frontrunners of the resurgence, or “Silver Age” of the nu metal genre and how unreal that is sometimes for them as musicians who grew up on the initial wave of nu metal bands (Diamond was even wearing a Korn hoodie at the time of the interview), but that they’re all there for it and definitely can live with being branded as such. It’s also unreal for Diamond and the rest of the band when they realize where their music have gotten them already, having a partnership with Jackson Guitars which resulted in a signature guitar for Diamond, and meeting (or even be friends) with some of their idols, including the opportunity for Diamond to gift Brian “Head” Welch from Korn one of her signature guitars as a thank you for inspiring her playing and writing.

In the end, we touch on what to expect of a Tetrarch show for those who haven’t picked up on the band yet, or haven’t had the chance yet to see them live, and Diamond promises that you won’t be disappointed. They’ve been doing this since they were kids, so this really is their bread and butter, and they always give it their all. And that reflects in a positive way onto every crowd they stand in front of, having a lot of people leaving a fan of the band after seeing them live. Quite the incentive to actually try and go see them live!
