Karen Dió returned with new single ‘Free Yourself’

Punk, Punk Rock

Following the breakout success of her debut EP “My World“, Brazilian punk-rocker Karen Dió has announced her second EP, “Fugaz“, due for release on August 21 via Hopeless Records. Powered by the viral success of “Sick Ride” and a run of shows alongside artists including Limp Bizkit, Sum 41 and Garbage, Dió continues her rapid rise with brand new single “Free Yourself“, available now.

Speaking of the track, she shares, “Funnily enough, Free Yourself is a song that I dreamed of. Most of the time I unfortunately forget the songs by the time I’m awake, but I’m glad I remembered this one. Later the same day, I decided to work on it and the melody of the chorus immediately came. When I showed the embryo of it to Matt (Bigland of Dinosaur Pile, Karen’s husband and writing-partner), he immediately was like, ‘That’s a hit!’ so we started to write the rest. During the whole process of writing Free Yourself we would remind ourselves to be completely free with our creativity and, to be honest, to try being ridiculous sometimes. One of my favourite parts of the song came from an improvisation where I said “Jeans are dangerous,” and Matt thought it was great, but he thought I said “Genes are dangerous.” We loved both quotes, but we decided to go with “Genes are dangerous” because it felt more provocative.”

Nothing is permanent. Karen Dió knows that better than most.

“I have to be so unattached to friends, things, and objects,” she says, a mindset forged through constant moves growing up and carried with her into music. That transient energy runs through everything she does, and it’s only intensified since ‘Sick Ride’ exploded online.

Now she’s back with “Fugaz”, a sophomore EP that cuts deeper than anything she’s released before. Across its songs, Dió explores the passage of time, personal freedom and eternal youth with a perspective shaped by experience rather than nostalgia.

The buzz surrounding her is impossible to ignore. Sum 41, Incubus, KennyHoopla and Fred Durst have all taken notice. It’s an eclectic list, but fitting for an artist who refuses to sit comfortably within any one scene.

Backed by Hopeless Records, Dió is also determined to shine a light on Brazil’s punk rock community on a global scale. For her, representing her Latin roots isn’t a talking point, it’s a responsibility.

“If I can open that door for Latin American artists, then I’ve accomplished my goal,” she says.

Pre-save here.
