Profound Lore Records gears up to release one of its strongest releases and it proudly presents the debut album of the U.S. death metal entity Warp Chamber. In the last couple of years, the Canadian underground label has introduced a large number of great acts such as Abyssal, Disma, Chthe’ilist, Mortiferum, Pissgrave and many more. This time, Profound Lore Records prepares to unleash another huge record that shouldn’t be overlooked by the fans of death metal. Following the release of the 2018 demo ‘Abdication of the Mind’, Warp Chamber’s debut album ‘Implements of Excruciation’ explores the sci-fi realms of death metal. However, the band offers a bizarre approach by possessing a pulverizing start where you’ll come across some of the weirdest growls you’ll ever hear in the contemporary times of the underground death metal bands. The band expertly creates the obscure Lovecraftian mythos of horror and disarrayed images of tentacles covered in phlegm.
Although ‘Implements of Excruciation‘ is only 30 minutes in length, Warp Chamber bends time and space and manages to weave a monstrous death metal album. Due to the sci-fi nature of the four tracks on the debut album, it is a twist of the old school elements. ‘Implements of Excruciation‘ is legitimately related to bands such as Timeghoul, Tomb Mold, Blood Incantation and Demilich where it combines the right amounts of blast beats and a violent roller coaster of mid pacing grooves.
For some reason Warp Chamber seems influenced by these bands, but there is even more that characterizes the music as a petrified style of death metal. All of a sudden, the opening track ‘Abdication of the Mind’ which previously appeared on the band’s first demo, begins with fast picking guitars. The inexplicable tone of the growls is one of the mysteries that surfaces with the blast beats. ‘Implements of Excruciation‘ is quite odd and quirky but ultimately twisted as the band channels the U.S. and the Finnish style of obscure death metal. Warp Chamber has those morbid elements of putrid death metal: the impulsive brutality and the evil malevolence. With the mixed and impure song compositions the U.S. death metal entity presents something unique and mysterious.
The second track ‘Shadows of Long Forgotten Terror’ expands further as the band shows more variations on the riffing sections. Warp Chamber‘s ability to churn out the atmosphere into a labyrinthine mid-pace is extremely unique. Despite the frenzied pace of the drums and the swirling riffs, they create something unparalleled to what the mainstream old school death metal bands offer today. Upon listening to the debut album I came to notice that the riffs on ‘Shadows of Long Forgotten Terror’ are similar to bands such as Morbid Angel. Towards a higher level of intensity Warp Chamber continues with stable performance throughout the four tracks.
There is a heavy concentration on the jarring riffs and tremolo pickings which sounds quite massive. The vocals possess an uncanny ability to growl and they sound like an alien. This remains one of the strongest parts of the music. The drums show the expertise in shifting from continuous pummeling and the guitars sound sharp. The massive resonance of the percussion and the gurgling vocalization emit low snarls. ‘Harvesting the Life Force of a Crumbling Orb‘ deals with Lovecraftian stories of horror. The track bursts into aggression and builds into a mid pacing locomotive. The guitars provide a surge of abrasive riffs. The track also includes a sudden breakdown where the drums provide double bass and crushing blast beats.
The final track ‘Exultant in Chthonic Blasphemy’ extends to eight minutes of consistency. On this track, Warp Chamber offers its uncanny flair and delivers a quality of twisted riffs that personifies Demilich. Bringing brutality, aggression and semi-technicality, it ultimately shows their visceral talent and the influences of Finnish death metal bands.
Whereas the tempo is a constant change, on every breakdown the guitars churn out the tremolo pickings and the drums unleash the blast beats. Warp Chamber morphs into an energetic tempo and the layered solos at the end of the track are notable. ‘Implements of Excruciation’ is a murky album steeped in chaotic sci-fi death metal and seemingly influenced by the band Demilich. This is a unique and extremely brutal piece of modern old school death metal and highly recommended for fans of Tomb Mold.
