Graspop Metal Meeting 2022 – Day 2 (17/06/2022)

Heaving been sick the previous days and having to skip the first day sort of (except for some live streams), I was so happy I finally got to the holy grounds of Graspop Metal Meeting. It’s been long enough, having to wait for 2 years, I’m not going to miss it a 3rd time. So I took my stuff and got over there. A bit of a hot day already, but definitely still doable. So glad I made it to the holy grounds.

Gloryhammer

I arrived just in time for Gloryhammer. Since they have a new singer, Sozos Michael, I was curious to see how he sounded live with the new line-up. And I have to say, I’m not disappointed. Of course, you can hear that their new song ‘Fly Away’ is more adjusted to his voice than the other songs. But he’s definitely doing a good job and hitting al the right notes. They played a wide range of songs that made for the best setlist. Later when I checked back, it were only 8 songs, but those 8 songs definitely satisfied me.

Setlist:

The Siege of Dunkeld (In Hoots We Trust)
Gloryhammer
The Land of Unicorns
Fly Away
Hootsforce
Angus McFife
Universe on Fire
The Unicorn Invasion of Dundee

Steel Panther

Steel Panther gets a bit repetitive over time. If you’ve seen them before, you know it’s about sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll and girls. And yeah, it’s funny sometimes, but also sometimes comes across a bit disrespectful if you’re not in the same joking mood. Nevertheless, their songs always sound very good and are fun to play. They got girls on stage again when they played ’17 Girls in a Row’. Right after that, lead guitarists Satchel’s guitar stopped working while playing ‘Community Property’. Luckily, Steel Panther knows how to ramble on about stuff, so no awkward moments were left untouched.

Setlist:

Goin’ in the Backdoor
Tomorrow Night
Asian Hooker
All I Wanna Do Is Fuck (Myself Tonight)
Crazy Train (Ozzy Osbourne Cover)
Weenie Ride
17 Girls in a Row
Community Property
Gloryhole

Black Label Society

First time for me seeing Black Label Society. Although I follow lead guitarist and singer Zakk Wylde on Instagram where he shows his licks and tricks on guitar, it was amazing to see them live. Their sound was so full and pure. An absolute blast to listen to.

Setlist:

Bleed for Me
Demise of Sanity
Destroy & Conquer
Heart of Darkness
A Love Unreal
Set You Free
Fire It Up
Suicide Messiah
Stillborn

A Day To Remember

A Day To Remember always make sure their show is something you’ll remember. Back in 2015, I saw them for the first time and returned with some good memories. This time in 2022 they did it again. They used some huge inflatable balls for the crowd to bounce around with and played their iconic songs like ‘Right Back at it Again’, ‘All I Want’ and ‘I’m Made of Wax, Larry What are you Made of?’. Of course, they also played some of their new stuff from their latest album ‘You’re Welcome’ like ‘Mindreader’. A Day To Remember leaves you with nostalgic feelings and leaves you craving for the next show.

Setlist:

The Downfall of Us All
All I Want
Paranoia
2nd Sucks
Right Back at It Again
Rescue Me
Have Faith in Me
Mr. Highway’s Thinking About the End
I’m Made of Wax, Larry, What Are You Made Of?
Mindreader
Sometimes You’re the Hammer, Sometimes You’re the Nail
Resentment
If It Means a Lot to You
All Signs Point to Lauderdale
The Plot to Bomb the Panhandle

Whitesnake

Whitesnake, one of the classics in the rock scene. Not really my usual cup of tea, but definitely a favorite for a lot of others. They started with playing ‘Burn’, a Deep Purple cover. Deep Purple would play on Sunday still, so it seemed like a nice tribute to start the show with. Of course, some of their very well known hits like ‘Crying in the Rain’, ‘Is This Love’ and ‘Here I Go Again’ came by throughout their set, making it one big party and a trip through memory lane.

Setlist:

Burn
Slide It In
Love Ain’t No Stranger
Slow an’ Easy
Fool for Your Loving
Crying in the Rain
Is This Love
Give Me All Your Love
Here I Go Again
Still of the Night

This evening, Within Temptation and Scorpions headlined the festival. Within Temptation had the craziest stage. A huge head covered the center of the stage and the light show was crazy. Scorpions always take you through a trip down memory lane. They’re even nostalgic when you hear them wile laying in your tent, enjoying them with your eyes closed.

Today was a special day. This year is the first Graspop without our Hammer Guy. You know, the guy that always ran around with a blow up hammer bumping everyone on their heads. His ashes were spread out on the holy grounds today. May you rest in piece my friend. And like you would have wanted: lets celebrate your life, not be sad about your death!
