Rotting Christ announces reissue of ‘Khronos’

ROTTING CHRIST, the Greek extreme metal band founded in Athens in 1987 by brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis, will reissue their 2000 album “Khronos” through Season of Mist on July 10th, 2025. Originally the sixth entry in the band’s catalogue, “Khronos” stands as the final chapter of a distinct creative period: ten tracks that close out the gothic arc Rotting Christ had been tracing since the mid-1990s before the band turned toward the more mythologically and culturally rooted territory of their later work.

The album occupies an uneasy position between two poles of the band’s identity. Recorded in the dead of a Nordic winter at Sweden’s Abyss Studios, it carries that cold in its texture: keyboards pulled back beneath the guitars rather than riding above them, the overall atmosphere leaning toward shadow rather than sheen. Tracks like “Thou Art Blind” and “Aeternatus” hit with a ferocity closer to the band’s uncompromising 1993 debut “Thy Mighty Contract” than to the polished gothic sound of the preceding “Sleep of the Angels,” while “My Sacred Path,” “Art of Sin,” and the title track hold onto the melodic intelligence of the late-90s records, threading dark wave undercurrents through slower, more insinuating structures. The eleven-minute closer “Glory of Sadness” eventually yields to an industrial-inflected hidden passage—a signal, in its own oblique way, that a door is closing. Among the record’s most debated moments is the band’s cover of Current 93‘s “Lucifer Over London,” a restrained and deliberate reading of David Tibet‘s neofolk original that drew divided responses on release and has continued to do so since.
