EDITORIAL PICKS: 8 bands you need to see at Alcatraz 2025 on day 1 (Friday)

Over 100 bands, tons of different genres represented by bands from all calibers, going from huge and legendary names to up-and-coming and promising acts. That is Alcatraz Festival! Here are 8 bands carefully selected by some of our editorial members of which we feel are going to be something special on Alcatraz Friday this year:

Messa

(La Morgue Stage - 14:30-15:15)

Italy’s Messa are masters of crafting immersive doom with a smoky, cinematic flair. They weave together slow-burn riffs, haunting female vocals, and touches of jazz, blues, and Mediterranean folk, creating a sound that feels both ancient and forward-looking. Their live shows are spellbinding journeys where every note feels carefully placed yet emotionally raw. In a sea of heavy bands, Messa stand out by leaning into atmosphere rather than sheer force. Expect to be hypnotized rather than pummeled because this is doom you feel in your bones. Just some months ago they released their latest new album, and it’s now already heralded as one of the albums of the year and a defining release for the band, so make sure you don’t miss out on hearing some of their new work live when they play at La Morgue!

Cabal

(Helldorado Stage - 15:10-16:00)

Hailing from Denmark, Cabal bring a blackened deathcore assault that’s as suffocating as it is precise. Their mix of down-tuned brutality, black metal atmosphere, and crushing breakdowns has made them a rising force in the modern extreme scene. On stage, they deliver an intense, almost ritualistic performance that keeps crowds in a vice grip from start to finish. This isn’t a set for the faint of heart, it’s for those who want their music to feel like a physical blow or like they say themselves they make “heavy music for sad people”. If you like your heaviness with an apocalyptic edge, don’t miss them.

Frayle

(La Morgue stage - 13:15-13:55)

Frayle’s sound is like a gothic dream slowly dissolving into a nightmare with ethereal vocals floating over sludgy, doom-laden riffs. The Cleveland-based band have carved out their own niche in the heavy scene by embracing both delicacy and darkness in equal measure. Their live performances are visually striking and sonically enveloping, wrapping the audience in a haze of reverb and emotion. This is music that seduces before it destroys, pulling you deeper with every song. For fans of dark, immersive music, Frayle’s set is a must-see sanctuary of sound. And they just recently announced a new album is coming, so maybe we’ll get some early tastes of what is to come next…

Heriot

(Prison Stage - 13:50-14:35)

The UK’s Heriot have been turning heads with their chaotic yet razor-sharp fusion of different extreme metal elements. Their music is dense and crushing, but their sense of dynamics makes each blow land even harder. Live, they radiate urgency where every riff, every scream feels like it has to be delivered in that exact moment. They’re part of a new wave of extreme bands who refuse to be boxed into one subgenre, and it makes their sets unpredictable and thrilling. Catch them now while they’re still climbing because this is a band on the verge of something huge.

thrown

(Helldorado - 16:35-17:25)

Sweden’s thrown are quickly making a name for themselves in the metallic hardcore world with their unapologetically aggressive approach. Their songs are short, sharp bursts of fury, packed with riffs that demand movement and breakdowns that practically beg for a pit and neverending streams of crowdsurfers. Live, their energy is relentless—there’s no downtime, no soft moments, just pure adrenaline. If you’re looking for a set that will leave you sweaty, sore, and grinning from ear to ear, thrown will deliver. Bring your stamina, because they won’t let up until the last note, our people who saw them a good month ago at Tuska Festival can attest to that!

3 Inches of Blood

(Prison Stage - 12:25-13:10)

Canada’s 3 Inches of Blood are the embodiment of heavy metal’s purest, most over-the-top glory. With high-pitched wails, galloping riffs, and lyrics about battles, beasts, and glory, they channel the spirit of early Iron Maiden and Judas Priest—but with a wink and a knowing grin. Their return to the stage is a rare treat, and their sets are famously fun, with crowds singing along at full volume. If you want to raise your fist, bang your head, and remember why heavy metal is supposed to be larger than life, this is the band for you.

Phil Campbell and The Bastard Sons

(La Morgue - 18h45-19h40)

Led by former Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell, this band is more than just a nostalgia act—it’s a celebration of rock ’n’ roll in its rawest form. They usually mix Motörhead classics with their own hard-hitting, groove-laden originals, delivered with the kind of swagger only decades on the road can produce. There’s an easy chemistry between Phil and his sons, making their shows feel both like a party and a masterclass in rock craftsmanship. If you want a set that blends grit, groove, and legendary pedigree, make sure you’re there when they hit the stage. And this show will be one you won’t want to miss, because they’re on the road to celebrate 50 years of Motörhead with a special set!

Crystal Lake

(La Morgue - 20h20-21h15)

Japan’s Crystal Lake take metalcore to cinematic extremes, blending punishing breakdowns with soaring, anthemic choruses and flashes of electronic and experimental sounds. Their live shows are pure spectacle with crowd-surfers flying, circle pits spinning, and the band feeding off every ounce of energy. They have a reputation for winning over entire festivals, even among those who think metalcore isn’t for them. Expect technical precision delivered with emotional firepower. If you’re ready for a set that feels like both a workout and an exorcism, Crystal Lake won’t disappoint.
