EDITORIAL PICKS: 7 bands you need to see at Hellsinki Metal 2025 on day 1

The third edition of Hellsinki Metal Festival is here! Just like last year, they have a stellar line-up with both foreign and Finnish bands that will please any lover of metal music. But with a bit under 20 bands every day spread over 3 stages, what should you definitely not miss? So here we are with what we'd highly recommend to go and see on day 1:

Rabbit Cult (Hellsinki - 01)

(14:15-15:00)

Where kawaii meets kantele and other traditional Finnish kantele, Rabbit Cult hop straight past genre boundaries into something entirely their own. This eccentric duo blend sugary J-pop aesthetics with folk textures, quirky electronic beats, and a sly sense of humor — think pastel colours hiding a sharp musical bite. Their set is equal parts playful performance art and genuinely infectious songwriting, making them one of the most unique acts you’ll see all weekend. A perfect way to kick off the weekend as they’re the first act on the Hellsinki 01 stage!

Gost (Helsinki -03)

(16:30-17:15)

If John Carpenter soundtracks crashed into a speeding black-metal freight train, you’d get Gost. Armed with razor-sharp synths, pounding beats, and a stage presence that’s equal parts horror movie villain and dance-floor destroyer, Gost is the perfect palate-cleanser between guitars — or your gateway into the darker corners of synthwave. At Hellsinki Metal, expect an unsettling, high-energy performance where neon meets nightmare on the Hellsinki 03 indoors stage.

Kanonenfieber (Hellsinki - 02)

(17:00 - 18:00)

World War I history told through the lens of blackened death metal — and not just as lyrics, but as a full-immersion experience. Kanonenfieber’s live shows blend relentless riffs with chilling narration, uniformed stage personas, and a haunting reminder of war’s grim reality. It’s heavy music with a purpose, turning history lessons into artillery fire.

Candlemass (Hellsinki 01)

(18:00 - 19:00)

Doom metal royalty. The inventors of epic doom are bringing their cathedral-sized riffs and operatic melancholy to Finland, and it’s going to be biblical. With decades of crushing slow grooves and a voice that could summon storms, Candlemass prove that heaviness isn’t about speed — it’s about weight, atmosphere, and the kind of power that rumbles in your chest long after the last note fades. Go and join them to celebrate 40 years of doom at the Hellsinki 01 stage!

Forbidden (Hellsinki 02)

(19:00 - 20:00)

Thrash metal legends from the Bay Area who helped shape the genre’s late-80s golden era, Forbidden are back and proving they’ve lost none of their bite. Expect precision riffing, breakneck tempos, and a masterclass in how to whip a crowd into a pit-frenzy. If you care about the roots of thrash — or just want to bang your head until your neck gives out — this is essential.

Fear Factory (Hellsinki 02)

(21:15 - 22:30)

Industrial metal pioneers with a discography full of cybernetic grooves, mechanical precision, and apocalyptic atmosphere. Fear Factory’s blend of crushing riffs, machine-gun drumming, and soaring melodic choruses has influenced countless bands, but no one does it quite like the originators. And with their brand new vocalist and mostly new live line-up, these trendsetters seem to have found some new life in a modern scene. At Hellsinki Metal, they’ll deliver the perfect soundtrack to a dystopian future — one that’s already here.

Moonsorrow (Hellsinki - 03)

(00:00 - ...)

Few bands can take you on a journey quite like Moonsorrow. These Finnish folk metal legends lately haven’t really played all that often live, especially in their own country, so getting them to headline on the Hellsinki Metal 03 indoors stage is truly something special. Their sprawling, cinematic pagan metal epics feel like standing on a frozen fjord under the northern lights, hearing the whispers of ancient gods. Expect long songs, rich layers, and a performance that’s as much a spiritual experience as it is a metal show. This is Finland’s own mythology come to life on stage and we’re already sure it’s going to be a memorable moment that you won’t want to have missed out on!
