Primordial headliner Herbakkersfestival

Black Metal, Doom Metal, Heavy Metal, News, Progressive

The free Belgian festival Herbakkersfestival in Eeklo released its names for their Metal Friday on the 18th of August. It’s the third year in a row that they organise one day purely for Metal.

The headliner is no one less than the Irish band Primordial. The band celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and plays a mix between doom and black metal with Celtic influences. “We were able to get Primordial by being brave and mailing their booking agent,” says organiser Willem Depraet from vzw Bakfiets. “We had already worked with the agent and they still knew who we were, so that helped.”

The evening starts with the melodic metal band The Difference. The Belgian band has been around for more than 20 years and play a mix of doom and heavy metal. The second band of the evening is the progressive melodic metal band Dyscordia. Both are Belgian bands, but have been around for a while and have toured in Belgium and abroad.

“There was already a tradition of Metal music in Eeklo”

Metal Friday started three years ago. “Herbakkersfestival exists for 11 years now, but until three years ago there was no metal music on the festival,” says Depraet. “Before there weren’t a lot of people who came on Friday evening, so we looked for a new concept. In Eeklo and in the area there was already a tradition of metal music: local youth clubs regularly organised metal concerts and festivals. That’s how we got the idea to bring harder music on the festival. During the first year of Metal Friday we had Diablo Boulevard, Belgian Associality and The Evil Pony’s.”

“We hope that people will drink a lot of beer”

Metal Friday is organised by vzw Bakfiets in cooperation with the city of Eeklo and music club N9. “We are a group of cultural music lovers from Eeklo and Meetjesland,” says Depraet. “We’ve been able to keep the festival free thanks to the grants and support from the city Eeklo and thanks to the sponsoring of the local commerce. Until now we’ve succeeded to keep the festival low-cost and we’re hoping we’ll be able to keep it up in the future, but we’re of course dependent of the weather and the turnout of people. We hope that people will drink a lot of beer, so we can stay free in the future!”
